Toronto '93 on the Neil Young tour, I think, was used for 'Hype'.

So we have:
Australian show 1/94 (clips used for Superunknown video. Not even sure if pro-shot though? Might've been handheld footage)
Kawasaki 2/94 (2 songs shown on Japanese tv; FOBD & Spoonman)
English show 4/94 (clips used for MTV news reports. This may have just been a single camera at the back of the hall though, not a multicam. I think it was Nottingham? Matt mentioned Brixton, but I think we're talking about the same gig)
Calgary 8/94 (clips used for Hype & Alive in the Superunknown)
Reading 8/95 (clips of WFTS and BHS shown on MTV)

I guess there are questions over how much of those shows were filmed. The TV crews in question may have only had permission to film a couple of tracks each.

For a band that's notoriously strict on live recordings - they even denied German TV station WDR permission to broadcast a full pro-shot show in 2012 - they have officially released some crappy performances recently. Chris' vocals on most of 'Live on I5' comes to mind! Also, 'Get on the Snake' from Louder Than Live and 'Pretty Noose' from SNL were released on Telephantasm.

There are also clips of 6/03/1994 San Jose too. I doubt any of those other than Calgary 1994 and Reading 1995 are complete, and I'm not even sure Reading is complete. I was surprised that they didn't bundle Calgary with the Superunknown reissue, but there was probably a reason for that. I was hoping they'd reissue Alive in the Superunknown with it, but sadly, I think that's going to be relegated to the dust bin of history.

well i think Kim said that the cd-rom was a cool item for its age, but now its really dated.

They really are a visual band, from their videos to the band pics they did...and its weird there is no official dvd or whatever...

I think putting Motorvision in the BMF box was a bit of a dick move - should've seen a general release. I'll forgive them if the full Paramount show is issued as a standalone. I mentioned the German pro-shot from 2012 which never went out, all the more strange then that they put the Hyde Park dvd with the King Animal box set. That, and the 3 song Lollapolooza 2010 dvd from the I5 release, both looked like real videoscreen shoots and not good enough for commercial release.

Vinylguy, your point about them being a visual band is true, with Kim getting Josh Graham to re-design their artwork. Let's hope Kim starts addressing their 'home movie' output. There still hasn't been a standalone dvd/blu-ray release which is crazy.

As for DOTU pro-shots, I've seen MTV clips from at least one of the Lolla's that year. Again though, I doubt they're complete recordings.

yeah, the whole hyde park thing was weird.

I hope they release that documentary they hinted some years ago...they have a few of the SU shows filmed for sure.

I think this stuff happens on a case-by-case basis. They need to readdress their marketing strategy though, since they seem to be releasing this stuff on a limited basis, thereby making it hard to find later on. I don't understand that. The only explanation that I can think of is making sure they make as much money as possible.

As for the documentary...I have no clue what's going on. They contacted me a few years ago to provide materials and I did, and I haven't heard anything since. I don't know any more than that.

My only guess...and I'm no sales wizard....is they feel...or the label feels...or its backed up by sales figures...that people that are going to purchase this stuff are the hardcore fans that will buy right away and having extra inventory for potential stragglers would end up not getting sold and not worth the production costs.

I think all this speculation might be too kind on the boys in SG...For all their awesome music and videos, they never struck me as a band that enjoys spending a lot of time together, nor advancing their brand. The deluxe release stuff ultimately has to be driven by someone in the band, and they have to feel inspired to sit down and pour over the back-catalog to see what is included. I don't get the sense any of these guys feel like doing that, and with Susan Silver out of the picture, I can't imagine there's anyone in a management role who is super familiar with anything committed to tape/video prior to the release of DOTU.

I dont have that feeling..i really think they enjoy to spent time together. Its mostly Kim who handles everything in the band..so maybe its him?...i think its more tied with the overall sales of this things.

It's definitely Kim. He's handling all of this stuff. I think the other 3 guys don't do much beyond saying yes or no when it comes to releases. Chris and Matt have different musical careers at this point that are a higher priority and Ben is just Ben, and doesn't want to be bothered with anything. That's what makes Ben so cool.

There's a clip in the documentary Hype! that features video from the Calgary 1994 show, but also features a very relevant quote from Kim in regard to his feelings about the music industry:



Speaking of why they didn't release any 1994 footage, here is "Kickstand" from the same show, that was on Alive in the Superunknown. You can hear that Chris' voice is starting to go, as he's kind of off-key at times. The Seattle show two days later was a disaster, and his voice is just all over the place. My hunch is that they decided most of the footage wasn't worthy of release.



Apparently they are touring next year, as it was announced they are headlining a festival in Ohio in May. So we'll see where that goes. I'd love to see them again.

That's a lot of material, which is good, but if you're a big fan you're gonna be buying a lot of stuff multiple times. I think the worst was putting the 2 instrumentals on the 2CD version of Superunknown, and not in the box. Major fans will obviously buy the box and then the 2CD version just the have those 2 tracks. And what were they? Album versions with the vocal tracks removed! I assumed they would be 'exclusive' takes.

I bought the King Animal & Telephantasm boxes 'cos there were LP's in it, but the Superunknown & Badmotorfinger boxes, nah!
