Re: Movie: Arrival (Amy Adams)
Loved this movie and think it will reward follow up viewing. Plenty of things to unpack that I'm sure will show how well it ties together upon a second look.
Things like:
The recurring motifs where parallel lines (in ceilings, building windows etc) show how the character (and the camera) move through time and space in a linear fashion early in the film. I need to pay closer attention to see how that visual develops over the course of the film and whether it upturns the linear symbolism.
The phrasing of weapon/language (and language as weapon). You sort of know those statements carry weight as you hear them but I don't think you get the full significance from who is making the statement until you'll have seen the full picture.
Something I liked was the naming of the heptapods as Abbot and Costello (apparently not done in the books) as a neat little nod to the "Whose on first?" skit that is all about miscommunication.

I'm seeing it again tomorrow with a friend. Looking forward to picking up on some stuff I may have missed.

This was great and I definitely cried like a child a few times. One of those movies I kinda feel like I've been waiting my whole life to see.

Why is this not getting more press? Seems like it is getting good reviews and everyone I know loves it.Orpheus wrote:This was great and I definitely cried like a child a few times. One of those movies I kinda feel like I've been waiting my whole life to see.
Also, the bolded part of your post is exactly how I feel.

I think the Sci-Fi-ness and lack of comic book heroes limits its marketing/buzz potential.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Why is this not getting more press? It's getting a lot of press and doing pretty well at the box office for a movie of its size. Award season buzz, too.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Why is this not getting more press? Amy Adams was fantastic. The rest was uneven, but that's sci-fi for you. The paradoxes space-time movies often trigger typically take me out of the moment.

Saw this and loved it, but somehow had the ending completely backwards and my wife had to explain it to me when we got home.

So the Aliens have which infinity stone? And how involved is Thanos with the machinations of Amy Adams' character? #needsmorethanos
