I'll have to look for the article, but I remember reading that he quit cigs circa 2005-ish (Out of Exile timeframe). Then a few years later around the time he recorded Carry On he said he actually took vocal lessons to help preserve his pipes. While he'll never harness the power he had in his youth (I mean who does, really?), the steps he's taken to improve his vocals since the Audioslave days have paid off ten fold. He sounded excellent on Higher Truth, the songs are arguably a different matter....but I CAN'T WAIT to hear him on the new SG album that's in the works. If we get one song, just one song as good as A Thousand Days Before on the next release, I'll be satisfied.

Yeah I'm astonished at how much his voice has improved. 10 years ago, the idea of a Soundgarden reunion was laughable because his voice was completely shot. Then he started busting out those SG tunes during his Carry On tour, sounded great, and he's been getting better ever since.

I don't think he's ever been a *great* live singer (with a full band anyway - acoustic is a different story), but that's probably because the songs are incredibly hard to pull off. Even if you go back to those live shows from the 80s and early 90s, he can sound really ropey.

Attrition rules. It just so fuckin good.

For me its hard to still get Taree and Black Saturday..and Worse Dreams too but i just adore the demo of that one.

Attrition took a bit for me then really clicked. Been Away Too Long and Black Saturday are the only songs I tend to skip even though both have great middle parts. I like Halfway There a lot even though it doesn't feel like a Soundgarden song. I'm still annoyed they had Mike do the solo for Eyelid Mouth. I mean you have Kim Thayil in the group you don't need help.

Oh, BATL is so good...i kinda hated it at first, but nowadays i just adore that beast....and live is fucking great. The Chile 2014 version is amazing...and i was there too.

What don't you like about that one?

I'm not a fan of Chris's voice on that one. Its very screechy to my ears. I find myself hitting skip to get away from it. It's a little better live and the bridge is the tops.

I like King Animal a lot but I'd still rank it below their 6 albums from the first run of the band. But that's just saying the original albums are better.

A Thousand Days Before > Blood on the Valley Floor > Bones of Birds is freaking fantastic.

Yeah, i really like KA too and think it suits better what i love about the band than Louder Than Love for example.

Yeah, i was obsessed with BCS when KA came out...specially that amazing bridge, where Chris sounds incredible, almost like a R&B singer.
But that song is all Ben for me. He is my guy.

Yeah, the demo is in the deluxe thing. There is a bunch of them, but my favorite one is Halfway There, the demo is this dark cool song while the studio version might be my least favorite SG song from all times. I hate it.
