Yeah, every small market club can afford to spend $60 million to bring in one prospect.numbers wrote:If the Red Sox hadn't built a strong farm system, which every small market club is capable of doing, they can't make this trade.

That's one player, what about the rest of the farm system? They aren't in a position to move Moncada if the system doesn't have depth.philpritchard wrote:Yeah, every small market club can afford to spend $60 million to bring in one prospect.numbers wrote:If the Red Sox hadn't built a strong farm system, which every small market club is capable of doing, they can't make this trade.

Also, these "small market" teams act like they are operating at a deficit. They make a ton of money both in profit and revenue sharing, because they chose not to reinvest it in the team is not the fault of the evil Red Sox and Yankees.

The ability to burn a $60 million investment was far more important to acquiring Sale than prospect depth.numbers wrote:That's one player, what about the rest of the farm system? Tampa Bay, for example, takes in more in revenue sharing money than they spend on their roster.

The Sox and Yankees and other big market teams have a massive financial advantage over small market teams. Small market teams often don't spend as much as they could, but they don't have the huge amount of flexibility of the bigger teams.numbers wrote:Also, these "small market" teams act like they are operating at a deficit. If they don't spend as much as they should though, they have nothing to bitch about, and certainly shouldn't direct their grievances at the clubs that are financing the majority of their rosters.philpritchard wrote:The Sox and Yankees and other big market teams have a massive financial advantage over small market teams. Not many franchises can pretty much write off David Price's deal then just go get Chris Sale and not miss a beat, not to mention if any of the prospects they traded are worth a shit, they'll get them back in free agency when they are good.
The cubs gave Jason Heyward 200 million dollars, to be a defensive outfielder that can't even pretend to hit on a major league level. No big deal for them.
By the time we get a guy we like, that can play at all, they're getting traded for 5 fucking shit ass left handers that can't even shave and that's why outside of about 3 cities in a given year, no one gives a fuck about baseball. It's boring as shit if the players aren't interesting.
Ooooh 5 years of control... yay.

If it makes you feel better the Sale trade isn't going to move the needle for Boston no matter how bad the RM contingent of Jimmy Fallons want it to.Electromatic wrote:Not many franchises can pretty much write off David Price's deal then just go get Chris Sale and not miss a beat, not to mention if any of the prospects they traded are worth a shit, they'll get them back in free agency when they are good.

Re: MLB
People always talk about having star power to draw fans to the games, but that's a very, very small part of it. Winning is the best (and I would suggest only) way to get fans to show up. If your team sucks but you have a couple exciting players, fans still aren't going to come out. You're much better off trading them and working on putting a contending team together.Electromatic wrote:Not many franchises can pretty much write off David Price's deal then just go get Chris Sale and not miss a beat, not to mention if any of the prospects they traded are worth a shit, they'll get them back in free agency when they are good.

Re: MLB
Of course, as with Sale, who obviously wanted out anyway but take Pittsburgh for instance, 20 years of irrelevance, they're finally pretty good again, and they dump Melancon for the pennant race? Why? If you're not going to try why own the team? So, trade him early to get something for him rather than sign him for 62 million... ok. So the sell job is, well we couldn't afford to resign him so we think got a great deal for him and sacrificed this past year for the long term... ok. you were completely useless for 20 years so rather than try to win you continued to punt.philpritchard wrote:People always talk about having star power to draw fans to the games, but that's a very, very small part of it. What's my incentive to show up? Hot dogs and beer? If you don't care why do I?
This is what leads to minor league style stupid promotions between innings an nonsense rather than people watching/caring about the game.

Re: MLB
Ridiculous Boston's world series odds went up so much based on a guy who didn't even pitch that great after the all-star break last year.
