My wife and best friend both love Dave Eggers and both violently hated that book

Violent hatred of the book doesn't make sense to me. It's a fluffy easy read, a beach "thriller." I totally understand not liking the book. But it's too innocuous to deserve violent hatred.

It's totally fine. I liked the characters and the pacing. Loved Egger's dialogue. Really liked the themes he was tackling. A lot about it registered and made me think about my online/social media experience in unexpected ways. The book acts like it's smarter than it really is at times, which gets annoying and makes some stretches feel pretentious. But there are also some really tense sections and it's a conversation well worth having.

But it's too easy to blow off and I wish more meat hung on the thing's bones. It SHOULD make a really strong film. We'll see. It's one of those stories that I think lends itself to a visual medium. As I read it I thought, "this will be a movie and probably one of those rare instances of the movie being superior to the book."

And it could very well skew that direction. Again, it's hard to be sure based on that one piece of advertising. But there are things in it that give me hope.

Emma Watson? I've only seen her in the Harry Potter films. I haven't seen anything else she's done. But I like her in those, yes. And I think she's a super cool chick and I wish her all the best. As an actress she's definitely grown a lot but still has a long way to go, I think. Not a charisma sink, by any means, though.

I've never watched a single Harry Potter book, and I've never seen her be good in anything. "Charisma sink" seems fitting

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

So before I deployed to Iraq, a survivor of the "Blackhawk Down" incident spoke to my unit. It was heavy. Afterwards, he told us "no matter how bad it gets, there is always worse". And he wasn't saying it to be a dick, I later learned before he deployed somewhere a D-Day survivor pretty much did the same thing for him. It got me through some tough times but I always get emotional, especially when it comes to WWII stuff. NOTHING I've ever done or seen was as heavy as what a lot of those guys went through. And I've gone through and seen some heavy, heavy stuff that I still work through on a daily basis. So I can't imagine what they've suffered through over the years. Jesus. That's why I say I don't want to see this movie but feel I have to.
