That's cool, I wish I had scene that. I saw NIN and David Bowie in '94, and it was amazing, but the opener was Prick, who weren't great. To this day, my dad refers to this night as the Nine Inch Prick concert.Iholdthepain wrote:Saw his band open for NIN near Halloween 1994...

Just mentally closed a very bizarre loop...
Back in the late 90s when I worked in the music department of a Christian bookstore (I know), I distinctly remember getting a huge-for-us (so probably like 5) shipment of CDs by a guy named Dicky Ochoa. I didn't listen to it, but the cover made him look like a Ricky Martin, Robby Williams dance pop knock-off. I think it might have been "praise and worship" music. They didn't sell so we ended up sending them back.
15+ years later I'm listening to Maraqopa by Damien Jurado. I love the way it sounds, so I google the producer, a guy named Richard Swift. Turns out it's the same fucking guy! And in addition to being an in-demand producer he plays in The Shins and The Arcs, and was the touring bassist for the Black Keys.
There's a gotta be a (small) landfill somewhere full of those Dicky Ochoa CDs.

Yep. Every once in a while some good stuff would come through, but 99.9% of it was dreck.tragabigzanda wrote:guestT wrote:Just mentally closed a very bizarre loop...

How much of an impact does David Bowie's death have on Blackstar being near the top of every Album Of The Year list?

Plus it's kinda cool to release an album like that then die. Kinda makes it better.

Oh I agree. Just wonder if some of the sources I've seen lists from would have ranked it that high otherwisetheplatypus wrote:Some. But it's a really good albumbodysnatcher wrote:How much of an impact does David Bowie's death have on Blackstar being near the top of every Album Of The Year list?

Mailing him a single dollar would be more fruitful for Mr. Blunt.

My wife and I just went to a punk rock flea market, and it struck me that I really do not relate to the punk aesthetic anymore (if I ever did at all). It seems like an aesthetic movement built around noncomformity is fundamentally contradictory, and bound for failure.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Just found out my friend James (who released his first solo album this year) also had a band a few years ago who released on record. The band was called Secret Pint. And their record is outstanding. Not quite as good as the stuff James did with Eric Piper and the Meltdowns, but still really solid. I'm glad I know of this record. What a lovely addition to my life.
