Re: Sonic Youth is fuckin amazing!
I finished Kim´s book a few months ago, and i gabbed it again because i was watching that 1996 show...Im still shocked on how everything finished with the band.
The other woman story is shocking, with her having an affair with other person from their entourage, with Moore being lost in their home texting like a madman, with his relapses and lies...everytime i read that, i remember the BA show from 2011, and how weird and strange was.

Oh yeah, and Demolish Thoughts? Man, that album is about her instead of Kim for sure. I remember at the time listening to Benediction and thinking ¨wow, thats a cool love song for Kim¨ Well, nope.tragabigzanda wrote:Every time this thread gets a bump, I pop in hoping that someone new has just realized that Sonic Youth is fucking amazing...
Yea, the ending of SY is a drag. I'm not going to try and place all the blame on Thurston. But the energy when I saw them on the Eternal tour was pretty shitty. And a lot of the lyrics from Rather Ripped and The Eternal have taken on a new light. Incinerate is a good example -- it now sounds like he's writing a song to his girlfriend, and having Kim play bass on it. Shitty.

Well, maybe..its a more polished version i would say. Maybe because of Beck´s production i dont know...To be honest, i kinda hate the album. Is too one dimensional and boring and after the novelty of ¨Thurston doing acoustic¨ wears off i dont quite like the songs.tragabigzanda wrote:I never even listened to that one. I really liked Psychic Hearts, and I loved Trees Outside the Academy, but was on sort of a break with them when Demolished Thoughts came out. It's kind of an extension of TOTA, right?VinylGuy wrote:Oh yeah, and Demolish Thoughts? Man, that album is about her instead of Kim for sure. The Best Day was fantastic, one of my favourite records of whatever year that was.

I saw that in the bookstore yesterday and thought about opening it up, then thought again. In my opinion. I'd just rather not think about any of it. I idolized those two, and it hurt to see them have such a public feud like that. Most of why SY fell apart is no doubt due Thurston's infidelity, but Kim never should have made it so public. It's shitty for everyone even if one person deserves more of the blame.VinylGuy wrote:I finished Kim´s book a few months ago, and i gabbed it again because i was watching that 1996 show...Im still shocked on how everything finished with the band.

One thing I learned long ago was to avoid knowing too much about artists and athletes (especially athletes) I admire; the more you know, the more likely you are to find something awful.

Yeah, give it a chance matt. Its pretty cool...and i just adore to read about the bands that i like, there is pretty cool info about most of the sessions from SY.
Yeah, the public feud was weird, and she comes out as very angry about the split, but very honest too. Im lucky enough that whatever happened didnt cloud my vision of Moore, i mean i saw him live and it was amazing, and The Best Day might be my favorite from him.
I learned that is a good thing to separate the artist from the human being.

From the now playing thread...
Also, "The Sprawl" is a pretty solid song, with the burden of following up "Teen Age Riot" and "Silver Rocket". I remember thinking it was a pretty big drop off from the first two songs to the third, but it's a grower. Not bad, but indeed a step down from the first two.
Listening to "Cross the Breeze" right now. Excellent music. SY hitting that peak. My negative with it is Kim, not of fan of her singing style on this particular song. On the flip side, "The Sprawl" is also good music but not as good as "Cross The Breeze", and I like Kim's singing style (I think this style typically wins out with her songs, especially in the 90's). "Cross the Breeze" wins though.darth_vedder wrote:Hey man, the random gods play what the random gods play. Total Trash really highlights what I love yet also tire of with SY. Amazing song than then carries on an additional "x" minutes with feedback, loose jams, general noise, etc...Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't mind it with this song, but there are a few out there that I just don't like it at all. I think Goo may have a song or two I'm thinking of.

Really liking Hey Joni. The music from around 2:50 to about the 3:30 spot is pretty impressive, Steve Shelly does his thing nicely, and Kim has a nice quirky bass groove going on.

Nah, it's just been awhile and I'm kinda doing some live updates as the songs come on. Honestly though, I don't listen to this one often, I mean, I've listened to it a lot but I typically play other albums of theirs. Over the years, I've made claims that Sister is better than Daydream, and perhaps just haven't given the album the proper respect I should because it's the one I "should like the best", because you know, it's their best album, right? Just like Ten is PJ's best (when we all know that is really No Code).tragabigzanda wrote:Wait, is this the first time you've listened to Daydream Nation?

I'll pick Sister as their best(haven't heard Evol). It feels more intense as the noisey parts seem to build and build in a more immediate way than Daydream Nation(also great).

Go listen to Evol, right now. Please. Just do it. If I weren't grading oral exams I'd put it on right now.rick malone wrote:I'll pick Sister as their best(haven't heard Evol). It feels more intense as the noisey parts seem to build and build in a more immediate way than Daydream Nation(also great).

Re: Sonic Youth is fuckin amazing!
Just re-listened to EVOL. It's just a mixed bag for me. It just gets off to a rocky start, with a handful of "meh" songs. It has a stronger 2nd half with "Green Light", "Death to Our Friends", "Expressway to Yr. Skull", and "Bubblegum". Those are all really strong songs, each foreshadowing where SY is going. So 4 out of 10. That's 6 songs I'm not crazy about though.rick malone wrote:Ok will do the first chance I get.matt reeder wrote:Go listen to Evol, right now. Please. Just do it.
