Speak for yourself. Force Awakens was copy of a star wars movie that already exists. Nothing original to talk about.

I'll be talking about this long after having forgotten TFA

There's nothing 'original' here either (I don't mean that as a critique). It's a story we all knew the ending to going in, with no chance of shaking up the star wars universe, that shoehorns just as much fan service into the story as TFA (although it has to work harder at it since other than Vader it only really have access to the B material). That's fine. What made R1 work were fantastic visuals and a terrific set of final action sequences (punctuated by that great Vader moment). What made TFA work was the excellent job it did creating new characters worth following for several films (and that thrilling final confrontation in the snow with Rey, Finn, and Ren). But in terms of originality we're still waiting. We have yet to see a new star wars movie willing to really break the mold in terms of story telling. Instead we've gotten two really good, extremely enjoyable movies that each reflect the personality and highlight the strengths (and weaknesses) of the their directors

I'd argue that we've not seen a star wars movie this action packed from beginning to end.

Really? TFA felt like it never stopped. This seemed to be rather plodding in some areas (which i loved)

As far as action sequences TFA had:

The initial assault on that village
Poe/Finn's escape
Rey/Finn's escape from Jakku
The Raththars (sp?)
The fight at Maz's bar
The aerial fight at starkiller
The ground infiltration at starkiller
The lightsaber battle

I couldn't list all the R1 action sequences, but it's probably close in terms of how much there is. The difference is that most of the sequences in TFA are much smaller in scope (especially the aerial ones), and much more character driven as a result. Everything in Rogue One is bigger (though a lot of it is shot in a way that makes it feel personal), doesn't emphasize characters nearly as much, but does that great job establishing size and scope. The conflict feels huger, and the characters feel smaller (as opposed to TFA, which, as part of the main skywalker story, is about the lives of a few people of galaxy spanning significance).

The only thing in TFA that was really big was starkiller base, but it was so big its size became irrelevant, with all of the action localized on a tiny part of it (both the space and ground components)

funny, i think i cared more about the characters in rogue one than tfa even without rogue one trying to be character driven
And they say that a hero could save us

That's a very misleading headline. He didn't really say anything at all about the reshoots.

Thinking back on this, the person I was most sad to see die was the defector Imperial pilot. He finally got them to trust him and he got blown up.

I knew it was coming too, but when that lightsaber lit up, I audibly gasped.
I wish that I had that same reaction, but the scene didn't work for me because the death was "too clean." Had Kylo toyed with him, tortured him a bit, sliced an arm off or two, and then finished him off...now that would have caused the shock and awe I was looking for.
Except Kylo didn't want to kill him, and felt horrible about it afterwards. The emotional impact of the exchange comes from the fact that none of it needed to happen, as Ren is trapped in a story he doesn't really believe in
Stip, I never reached that conclusion with Kylo not wanting to kill Han, even after a few views. My interpretation is that he wanted to kill Han to take his sith lord stuff to the next level. My interpretation might be clouded because JJ presented the classic kill scene in that you knew someone was falling down from that height and the most likely scenario was Han.

That's what I took from the scene as well. piggybacking on the scene with Vader's helmet and Snoke's speech about how this is the hardest test for him, the test being "can you kill your dad and go Dark, or do you be all mamby-pamby and save him and go Light."
