I totally expected Han to die. There wasn't much suspense - even the going back and forth, it was fairly easy to guess.

I knew it was coming too, but when that lightsaber lit up, I audibly gasped.

I wish that I had that same reaction, but the scene didn't work for me because the death was "too clean." Had Kylo toyed with him, tortured him a bit, sliced an arm off or two, and then finished him off...now that would have caused the shock and awe I was looking for.

Except Kylo didn't want to kill him, and felt horrible about it afterwards. The emotional impact of the exchange comes from the fact that none of it needed to happen, as Ren is trapped in a story he doesn't really believe in

Stip, I never reached that conclusion with Kylo not wanting to kill Han, even after a few views. My interpretation is that he wanted to kill Han to take his sith lord stuff to the next level. My interpretation might be clouded because JJ presented the classic kill scene in that you knew someone was falling down from that height and the most likely scenario was Han.

I don't have a problem believing Kylo Ren was conflicted about killing Han, but what is stip's evidence for him regretting it afterward?

Regret would be the main thrust of his self torture. You don't think that was a source of Vaders hate? He killed padme. And forever hated himself for it. Huge source of a Sith Lords power is self loathing

I'd have to watch the movie again (which is on my to do list the next two weeks), but it's subtle stuff like the expression on his face, and how furious he is about Rey's relationship with Han, and his desire to mentor her (and in the process be a better mentor than Han was to him). He was clearly expecting to find some kind of peace and closure after killing Han, and finds himself just as conflicted as ever, desperate for a father figure, jealous of the people who have them, and not feeling any more independent. The scene where he kills Han in some ways is obvious (you know it needs to happen the way it does for the sake of the movie), but it's fairly easy to imagine it going a different way and Ren surrendering the light saber to Han and having a good will hunting 'it's not your fault' kind of moment. It's one of the reasons why the scene lingers as long as it does in the moments before he activates the saber.

It's important (I think) to understand that headspace to help make sense of why the final sequence with Rey and Finn plays out the way it does, and why they are ultimately able to beat him. He's completely lacking in focus. He can't even fixate on the dark side rage that Luke uses to power himself through the end of his final duel with Vader.

Rey is a survivor and a far more natural bad ass. And totally vulnerable without being weak or fragile. Unlike Jyn. Who is both weak and fragile.
