I always read "reckon" with a twang, because I reckon only cowboys and hillbillies actually say that word, so it was pretty funny to read this post and imagine you saying it.

Well, I've seen some articles from linguists who think that southern twang is a pretty direct relation to how English people spoke back when they first came to the States.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

'I reckon' is a really common start or end to a sentence in the U.K. Ireland and Australia.

Same way 'I feel like' starts a lot of sentences in the US/Canada

Scoff. It's well-intention but misguided. AMPAS's move makes way more practical sense. Let's pretend I wanted to produce a small movie in MT, and had a very tight budget: Under BAFTA'a rules, now I would have to fly in minorities from other states to work on the production? That is nonsense, and it has nothing to do with being creative or imaginative, and everything to do with the practicality of making a film in a region that is overwhelmingly white.

But people who win awards are more apt to get funding and top-tier talent for future projects.

Also things that have don't necessarily equal art.

I agree with Argo. The move has nothing to do with the health of art. Also, I'm not against this move. I think it's a great move, actually. But that's separate from my feelings on how the move relates to what art is or isn't or should be or whatever.
