I like what this guy says about the theme of "trust" running through the movie.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I knew it was coming too, but when that lightsaber lit up, I audibly gasped.
I wish that I had that same reaction, but the scene didn't work for me because the death was "too clean." Had Kylo toyed with him, tortured him a bit, sliced an arm off or two, and then finished him off...now that would have caused the shock and awe I was looking for.
Except Kylo didn't want to kill him, and felt horrible about it afterwards. The emotional impact of the exchange comes from the fact that none of it needed to happen, as Ren is trapped in a story he doesn't really believe in
Stip, I never reached that conclusion with Kylo not wanting to kill Han, even after a few views. My interpretation is that he wanted to kill Han to take his sith lord stuff to the next level. My interpretation might be clouded because JJ presented the classic kill scene in that you knew someone was falling down from that height and the most likely scenario was Han.
I don't have a problem believing Kylo Ren was conflicted about killing Han, but what is stip's evidence for him regretting it afterward?

I'd have to watch the movie again (which is on my to do list the next two weeks), but it's subtle stuff like the expression on his face, and how conflicted he is about Rey's relationship with Han, and his desire to mentor her (and in the process be a better mentor than Han was to him). He was clearly expecting to find some kind of peace after killing Han, and finds himself just as conflicted as ever.

It's says a lot about the kind of person you are that you thought that.

I'm pretty sure none of that good stuff is there. Or rather it's all there but with dark shit attached. None of it altruistic.
To me it looked like premeditated murder. I think Kylo was playing Han, and always intended to kill him.

Can you guys see yourselves coming back to this often? And once it's settled in do you see it rising or falling in your personal Star Wars rankings?

Eye roll at a lot of the Star Wars fan base suddenly turning on the force awakens saying they hate it and this is way better but I guess that's to be expected. Surprised at a lot of people liking this I never imagined would and I lot of people I thought would love it that really don't.

I think I'd go back to it as often as the prequels, which is not often. I'd rank it 6th among the 8 films and I don't see it ever rising above that. But I've only see it once, and will be seeing it again on Monday - we'll see if anything changes but I doubt it will.

Agreed on the fan base saying what they are about TFA. I loved TFA, and despite it being pandering, safe, and a rehash of A New Hope - unlike the prequels or this film, it felt like part of the original trilogy. Even when I come across it on cable, I still get teary eyed at some of the scenes and music, specifically when Han and Chewie first board the Falcon, and the endng with Luke.

I dont rewatch movies often. I haven't even watched Force Awakens since the theatre even though I own it. I can see myself watching this about once every two or three years. I really liked it.

For my own money and emerging thought is that R1 is a lot better second time round.

I'll try to hit the big points in the spoiler tag:
Spoiler: show
- No crawl, as I figured, was not only totally fine, it was really cool.
- Gareth's direction and the cinematography are just outstanding from top to bottom.
- There wasn't a single boring part of this film for me. I was gripped from the first shot and the movie never let go
- K-2SO (while fun) is vastly overrated. Though, his "death" was one of the hardest to take.
- Bodhi Rook (maybe my favorite character in this film) is vastly underrated. His death ripped me apart.
- The first Vader/Krennic scene was my least favorite scene in the movie; Vader should have been a whisper until he appeared at the end.
- Tarkin was so well done. (Like others, my wife had no idea he was CGI and she asked me if Leia was old footage or CGI).
- This movie is visceral and violent.
- I was shocked by how much the violence affected me. I shook every time anyone (even a storm trooper) took a shot.
- Perhaps it's the current US climate but this movie felt so real and painful and relevant.
- I loved how this was a movie more about a rebellion than a person.
- I loved the in-fighting of the rebellion and the small rebellions within the rebellion.
- The theme of trust really hit me and rang true.
- More Saw Gerrara! He was fascinating and brilliantly portrayed. He could have his own Star Wars Story stand alone film.
- This is hands down the best acting we've ever seen in a Star Wars film.
- I did not see Chopper but I did catch the Syndulla reference.
- I love how this connected to the original film.
- Masterful move to have Galen build in the flaw in the Death Star. Great retconing that NEEDED to happen.
- I did not like how Krennic died.
- There were too many references to Star Wars; some of them really took me out of the movie and felt unnecessary.
- However, when those references worked (when they felt honest and not shoehorned) they were magical moments.
- This is the first Star Wars movie to make me cry.

I can agree with almost all of that apart from the part about K-2SO (underrated, not overrated). The last didn't happen to me, but I get why it did for you.

Thinking more on it, I would like to explore more characters like Chirrut who are connected to the Force or believers but are not completely Force sensitive. The power and mysticism of it during the time when this movie takes place fascinates me. I can understand why people didn't like his character, but him and Baze were highlights for me.

Part of my experience w/ K2SO could be expectation management. I didn't hear a lot about this movie before I saw it. But virtually everything I did hear was about how great he is. How he's the best part of the movie. How he's the best droid we've seen so far. How people can't wait to buy toys of him. I liked K2SO, quite a bit. I think Tudyk does a great job and he looks amazing in the movie. But he wasn't my favorite character. He wasn't the best part of the movie. He isn't the best droid we've seen so far. His humor feels forced at times. And much like Cassian I find that I respect him more than I like him. Which is fine. But, as I said, makes him "overrated" to me.

Agree.

I felt the same about Lyra Erso. I'm going to read Catalyst now that I've seen this movie to see if it explores her character more.
Spoiler: show
Was she actually Force sensitive? Or just a believer? How did Galen feel about The Force and his wife's faith/belief/whatever.
There is so much more to mine.
