Dime, I think I'd tell a first timer to start work R1. It's the prologue to the epic novel. Though, it does render the opening crawl redundant and silly if you watch back to back.

i think you need to watch the ot first no matter what so effects dont feel dated. also, most of R1s emotional weight requires you to read the OT empire v rebel story back into the movie

I actually think his review of this is terrible and nearly devoid of insight or exploration. It feels like he wrote it off without examining much of anything. Disappointing.

Yknow one thing I was really worried about and rogue one pulled off in spades?

The space battle scenes.

The x wings move like and are shot exactly like those in a new hope. But yet still manages to be modern and fast paced. The other ships in the fleet could be exactly from Jedi and they are shot the same but in new ways too that fit perfectly.

Full credit should be given for how they were able to take things we should be fully jaded by saturation about by now...the sight of the Death Star, space battles involving noncharacters, imperial walkers, Darth Vader swinging a lightsaber...and make them all feel as exciting as if we'd never seen them before. Old DV with his red blade felt more remarkable than all of the cornball lightsaber shit we've seen since Jedi. And frankly, made this "well this lightsaber has two blades, and this one has three but two are wrist guards," game seem...cute.

I disagree. I think this stands fine on its own. The references require you to read the OT empire v rebel story back into the movie. The emotional weight is there without the other films, though. And maybe even stronger or more potent when you don't know the inevitable outcome of the mission.

the sheer existence of the empire, the power of the images, that all depends on what has come before. edwards does a masterful job playing with someone else's iconography, not creating his own.

It's a formative stage, unfocused rebellion. Desperate, doubtful of their ability to engage the empire in open warfare, and undercutting its ideals with "what choice do we have" as justification. So, basically every rebellion or terrorist organization ever.

When you think about it, Jyn is arguably the most significant figure to the success of the Rebellion in any movie.

Figured out my problem with this film.

It's a film shot within current tastes. It could be a marvel film. Every film is just film shot like that now.

It's 'hip'. It's 'current'


No Star Wars film has ever done that. They've usually avoided it. And rightly so.


They speak to their time in message. Sure. But they never use the language of filmmaking in their time to get across.

That's why Star Wars doesn't really date. Cos there's magic behind it.


This film is going to date badly. Very badly.
