Joey, watch the film again with this in mind. It's all there. Some of it is expository, and some of it is extrapolating from the context and the more subtle notes in the performance, but that's in part what makes it well done. It is a pretty complex journey and performance, but it also cannot upstage the three new characters that have to shoulder the story going forward.

Some of that is there. Some of it is inferred (either logically, using context clues, or less logically using guesswork). But a lot of that happens in between. And a lot of what you posted is Ren's arc. I'm not hating on The Force Awakens. I love that movie so much. But I am more interested in the disconnect between fans as it regards R1. Obviously, we can fall back on the ol' "art is subjective" defense. And that's totally true. But it's genuinely strange to me when I see people criticizing R1 for flaws that are forgiven or even championed in The Force Awakens.

It's like that Collider article dime linked earlier. The guy constantly contradicts himself. He says the movie is fan service and that it should have been more original. Then turns right around and points out specific moments when the movie is too original and calls it out for NOT MY STAR WARS gripes. Then tells fans of the film they can't have it both ways. Really, dude? Well, neither can you, Collider Guy. He brings up valid issues, too. Many of which I also noted in my first post about what I thought of R1. The Vader/Krennic scene is limp and unnecessary. There are too many unnecessary references jammed into the narrative. And on and on.

But why are some so eager to demonize the film for those flaws but explain away the same flaws in the other films? I just don't understand that. I feel like I'm fairly consistent in the way that I treat all of these movies. Some things I like, some I don't. But in general, I don't think I do a lot of demonizing one at the expense of the other. I find this same sort of thing in people who adore Jedi but hate TFA when their chief issue with TFA is it's "rehash" "unoriginal" nature.

I don't know. It's all so silly. I think everyone's opinions are valid. I think people have a right to their own personal reactions and reflections. And we can all love things or hate things and co-exist and move on. I think I'm just surprised by the level of (what comes across to me as) hypocrisy and meanness in some of the wider internet discourse regarding these two films in a beloved franchise. A franchise that has always been uneven and shaky. Does that make sense?

Again, this is way I asked that question about how these movies would have been perceived or how their impact could have changed had they been released in the opposite order. I just think it's fascinating, is all.

Picking apart either film by using flaws that are contained in both is what I'm getting at, dime. I don't see any reason to pick apart The Force Awakens on Rogue One's terms or vice versa. It's entirely possible and valid to like/love one of these films and dislike/hate the other. That's not my issue. No one has to like either of them. But what we've seen a lot of (in this thread and across the internet) is some need to bring down one to elevate the other and I think that's weird. Because this has always been such a beloved (though flawed) franchise.

I do look forward to the same people trying this approach to say the Han movie is better than episode 8. I think it's just an element of excitement about the new shiney thing and of course it's better than the old one. Or failing that accusing the new thing of being a rip off of a previous hing and therefore poorer for trying that.

I hope from my bones out 8 is like nothing we have ever seen and prevents the endless comparisons to empire. Though that's gonna happen no matter what.

It probably all comes down to what an individual values from their art -- specifically, their films. I'm probably over thinking all of this and it makes way more sense in its simplest form.

I saw this today. I stayed spoiler free going in.

I thought there was a bit too much planet jumping early on. Jyn didn't need to start the movie captive - that seemed unnecessary and stupid. I did love the bits of Star Wars stuff (helmets, aliens, bit characters) throughout. I loved the physical chess set very much. Did Tarkin attack the surface of Scarif just to kill Director Krennic? I thought Biggs and Wedge would have made an (CGI) appearance. I thought R2-D2 would have done the interfacing with and stealing of "Stardust" materials. All these years I assumed he held the schematics all along and all Leia did was record the message before he escaped to Tatooine. Now we know she recorded the message and stored the schematics all while the Tantive 4 was being boarded. They did say "Force" many more times than I would of guessed. I was kinda hoping for an F-word less SW, maybe that'll be Han. I expected all of the group to die, so no shocker there. Including Bail Organa from the prequels is OK, but showing Mustafar's name on screen is a no-no? Gimme a break. Seeing digital Carrie Fisher almost brought a tear to my eye.

I liked it. If all the spin-off's were this good, I'd be pleased. However, I would rank it 7 out of 8 SW movies.
