Re: RM Movie Club #4: Once Were Warriors
Just finished watching this - I'd forgotten how hard-hitting it was. The last act had me in tears, I'll write up more later, but now it's time for the Missus to go cook me some eggs

Re: RM Movie Club #4: Once Were Warriors
It had been a long time since I had watched this and I'd forgotten what a hard watch this can prove to be - especially when you know people where this was their life or still is.
There were sense in this which I found heartbreaking - Jake not caring that Boogie got taken away and put in a boy's home, when Mavis comes over and visits Beth after Jake beat the crap out of her doesn't offer any real support for Beth, just tells her to keep her mouth shut and her legs open, the general neglect of the children due to the lifestyle of the parents - and of course the abuse of grace.
The whole final act of the movie pretty much had me tearing up. From the point Beth makes the decision that she break the cycle and leave, but comes to this point too late for her daughter.
The only character who seems to come out of this movie in better shape than when they started was Boogie who got removed from his whanau and the environment of violence and neglect and had someone teach him about true mana.
I did like the opening scene with the idealistic picture which then gave way to the reality of the situation.
I'd still rate this movie highly - not an easy watch, but well worth it

Re: RM Movie Club #4: Once Were Warriors
The music in this reminded me of the way music was used in The Wire. Not necessarily the music itself--genres, types, sounds, etc.--but the way that most of the music I remember was actually part of the narrative and not a "soundtrack." People were either listening on their car radios, a jukebox, karaoke, or--my favorite--singing as a large group. There was very little, if any, music that was just sort of "played over the movie." It gives it a more realistic feel, I think. There's also a nice contrast between the drunken sing-a-longs at Jake's parties vs. the chants and songs at Grace's funeral.

Just let it die. It's fine. We tried. It didn't work. It's fine.

I watched it once a long time ago. I keep meaning to revisit the film, but I just haven't had the time to sit down with it. I do really want to, though.

Hey, this movie got mentioned on a Star Wars podcast I listen to today because Rena Owen (Beth) does some voices in two of the prequels. You learn something new everyday!
Miss you guys.
