Laughing hard at the people whose biggest problem with this is the fan service. And there's a lot of them.
It's a Star Wars film. You know the time frame it's set in. There's gonna be x wings familiar droids costumes sets etc.
It's complaining just to complain I guess. Not even being clever about it or coming at it a new way.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I think it depends on how we're defining "fan service." If you're talking about all Star Wars iconography, then, yes, I agree, that's silly. But if we're just taking out the usual Star Wars universe stuff (X-Wings, light sabers, blasters, Stormtroopers, Death Star, etc) and we're calling "fan service" the extraneous stuff (Walrus Man, "I've got a bad feeling about...," Ghost, Chopper, Leia, etc) then I don't think that's a silly criticism at all. In fact, I share most of that criticism.dimejinky99 wrote:Laughing hard at the people whose biggest problem with this is the fan service. And there's a lot of them.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Did you read that interview Stip linked? The one with Ben Mendelsohn? There seems to be a lot floating around out there that throws a wrench in the whole "studio meddling" idea. Which is interesting to me. Though, a lot of that might be just protecting the Mouse. Anyway... don't let our thoughts or feelings or desire to pick it apart ruin the film for you. That's not fair to you or the movie. Just ignore all of us. We don't have a lot going on right now.tragabigzanda wrote:I just don't think it warrants much picking apart or criticism. It was a really fun war movie set in the Star Wars universe. It entertained and made me feel things. Its flaws were minor and obviously the result of studio meddling. The end. Trying to prove or disprove its merit relative to the property or to childhood memories of beloved characters feels pointless to me.durdencommatyler wrote:What can I do to help?tragabigzanda wrote:I liked this movie a lot but this thread is starting to make me hate it.

Really looking forward to my wife's reaction, as she has only the most rudimentary knowledge of what comes later

We'll have to compare notes. My wife's in the same boat. I'll be interested to see if/how their reactions differ.stip wrote:Really looking forward to my wife's reaction, as she has only the most rudimentary knowledge of what comes later

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
More from my "insider" guy (regarding reshoots and such):
From my understanding, Edwards shot 75% of the film that was released. He and Tony Gilroy are close, so there really weren't any issues or arguments. Gilroy also received a writing credit since several key aspects of the film changed.
The main reason why Gilroy was hired, instead of having Edwards do the reshoots, is because of the changes and the more than doubled VFX budget after the initial screening for the Disney brass. There wouldn't have been enough time to hit the December 16th release date otherwise.
Edwards oversaw all of the VFX as well as the ADR while Gilroy was conducting the reshoots. The fact that Edwards trusted Gilroy made for a seamless collaboration, which I think is seen onscreen.

Had a question for you guys about that.
Given they had to Bail Edwards out in effect, would you guys be happy to see Edwards shoot another Star Wars film? Saga or standalone?
And do you think Disney would hire him again?

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Well... again, it seems like that's a false narrative. Everything I'm seeing/hearing is that Edwards shot an amazing film. Disney loved it and wanted to make it even better. So they expanded his FX budget and gave him room to go in and do whatever he wanted to the film. This includes giving him an ending that killed off all characters (which he wanted in the first place but didn't think they'd go for). The only reason a Gilroy was brought in was to help Edwards meet his deadline and give him time to focus on the visuals and editing, which are his strengths.dimejinky99 wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:More from my "insider" guy (regarding reshoots and such):

So... yeah. I'd love to see Edwards direct another Star Wars film and I can't imagine why Disney wouldn't hire him again. Seems like they have a huge hit and everyone loved working with Edwards.

True enough. TBH at this point I'd rather him than Treverow doing 9. Give him a saga film now that he's cut his teeth on the Star Wars bone. But that won't happen.
Dammit I just wish I really loved his movie.

Edwards will never make another SW film, and I wouldn't want him to anyway. He got it out of his system now. I'm excited for him to make an original project again.

Yeah, if it had to be one or the other, I'd rather have a new original Edwards project than another Edwards Star Wars film. Totally agree. But I wouldn't cry if we got both.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Edwards will never make another SW film, and I wouldn't want him to anyway. He got it out of his system now.
