From my understanding, Edwards shot 75% of the film that was released. He and Tony Gilroy are close, so there really weren't any issues or arguments. Gilroy also received a writing credit since several key aspects of the film changed.
The main reason why Gilroy was hired, instead of having Edwards do the reshoots, is because of the changes and the more than doubled VFX budget after the initial screening for the Disney brass. There wouldn't have been enough time to hit the December 16th release date otherwise.

Well... again, it seems like that's a false narrative. Everything I'm seeing/hearing is that Edwards shot an amazing film. Disney loved it and wanted to make it even better. So they expanded his FX budget and gave him room to go in and do whatever he wanted to the film. This includes giving him an ending that killed off all characters (which he wanted in the first place but didn't think they'd go for). The only reason a Gilroy was brought in was to help Edwards meet his deadline and give him time to focus on the visuals and editing, which are his strengths.
So... yeah. I'd love to see Edwards direct another Star Wars film and I can't imagine why Disney wouldn't hire him again. Seems like they have a huge hit and everyone loved working with Edwards.
id be happy to see him work w someone else's script. he is a terrible choice for an indiana jones movie
and I disagree that a lot of the stuff like Chopper and even Leia were fan service. The R2D2/C3PO was needless, so was the 2 guys from the Cantina. But putting in things like the Ghost that ties it to the other parts of the universe in a non obtrusive way that makes sense I think is different than fan service. And Leia just firms up the time line virtually to the minute.
