Gonna slowly work through their discography. Thought Can't Buy a Thrill was great. Countdown to Ecstasy, not so much.

Can't Buy a Thrill is a masterpiece. I can't stop listening to it. Now I'm trying to slowly work my way into Aja, which seems much more esoteric and daunting, but I'm getting there.

Re: When did you get into Steely Dan?
Aja is a super catchy album, but it's more firmly planted in jazz. I only got Can't Buy a Thrill at first, too. Now I think of it as one of their least interesting albums. Sorry for the pretentious post but we're talking about fuckin' Steely Dan here..LoathedVermin72 wrote:Can't Buy a Thrill is a masterpiece. I can't stop listening to it. Peg is probably my favorite tune. I fucking love the layered Michael McDonald harmonies and the bass in it is sweet. Fuck yeah.
My dad and I recorded a version of Do it Again a few years ago. We started Reelin' in the Years and got most of the rythym section down but neither of us could nail the solo exactly (and he wanted it exact) so we just never went back to it.

Re: When did you get into Steely Dan?
I do not care much for Steely Dan. But I feel like I should. I own and have consumed Aja, Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam. Pretzel Logic is great and the only Steely Dan album I've heard that I really love. I like a few songs on Royal Scam (especially Green Earrings
).
I basically hate everything on Aja.
What should I listen to from them if I want to like them more? What are three to five great songs not on those three records that could turn me into a fan?

Re: When did you get into Steely Dan?
At first I was dismissive of SD as "lounge music" or "soft rock" or what have you, but what really sucked me in is what usually gets me, the guitar playing. From there I started realizing the level of musicianship of everyone in the band. I remember Bodhisatva really jumping out at me at some point and thinking, "Holy shit, these guys are tearing it up!" I don't love every song but it's go to mellow music for me.
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Re: When did you get into Steely Dan?
The music is deceptively complex. I find myself often coming back because of how unexpected and intricate the song structures and movements are.
