He's just overreacting to the overly positive reactions. It's fine.

I watched this today! As I mentioned in the movies thread, I was looking forward to it for a long time, but since I never go to the movies, I avoided reading about it for months. It looked wonderful and I enjoyed the feel of the world and all of that stuff, but I was kind of "meh" on the big plot devices. I don't think it was that clever or original at all, which I would've forgiven if there was something fresh about the characters, but "dead kid with cancer drives main character" just didn't do it for me.

I wish the aliens were just humans all along.

I should've been clearer! Because, yeah, of course it wasn't what drove her, since it technically happens at the end of the narrative. But it was framed that way for 90 minutes, which helped me lose interest, I think.

That actually makes sense to me. I disagree, in that it worked on me, but I totally understand what you mean and why it affected you that way.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Although I think it'd be a lazy critique to say "The entire movie was too much like Contact," I think it's fair to say that that plot point was too much like Contact.
