Pearl Jam fans tastes are so varied that nothing can be taken from that comment. All is fine. You will be able to hate it on your own accord in no time!

Very true....what one person likes can be completely different to someone else.........I mean, I've remained in shock for over a decade with the fact that some people think "RIOT ACT" is a really good album.
Do you normally have trouble handling the truth in other situations?

And now I'm like looking forward to this single, I guess.

Pretty much, but it's 05:20am so I might just stay awake now.

Don't let me down PJ. Wow, whatever happens though, this has made me feel like the obsessive fan I am, and I guess it's reminded me that I'm still here after all this time. I'M STILL ALIVE.
This is the fun stuff.

I loved the music In the clip. I'm hopeful. But outside S/T I've never had a bad feeling towards a PJ record so perhaps I'm biased?
What if everyone loves it? RM is due a consensus/love in on PJ.
Maybe this is the time?

I'm with you.
Just hope this isn't phantom menace syndrome and we're building this expectation up past the album. Which we are, undoubtedly.

What do you consider to be a realistic personal expectation for the new album? I would imagine it's different for everyone.

I don't have a huge list of criteria for liking this song.

I meant more for the album. I can't imagine anyone is like "it's got to be the best album ever!" but I would bet a lot of the other answers would vary. Would 2-3 songs that fit in their elite echelon of songs surrounded by 10 ok songs be enough for you?

I'm not sure I have criteria either. We are just the end user.
I never saw the point in all of us posting about 'as long as they do this..' And putting our demands on them as a band. Think we all depend and expect too much sometimes.
Ill just be happy to hear new songs. It at least gives RM a shot in the arm for the next few years:)

(That said I really hope it's a double album haha)

Personally I'd need to find it a consistent listen throughout, even if there is filler. Backspacer was that, for me. S/T wasn't; it was filled with too much stuff I hated.

Music wise I don't mind really as long as it communicates something, whether that is emotion or energy I'm nonplussed. I dont really feel anything when i listen to Backspacer. I hope the production is more roomy and organic than the last two albums. Beyond that I'm looking forward to some new music - the stuff in the tour clip sounds promising on these criteria.
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

I still really don't get the 'why have expectations?' thing but it's a nice sentiment I guess, and if you can feel it then good luck to you. If I didn't have expectations of my favourite band in the world I would think there's something wrong.

I just learned after ST that its better not to build up too much and expect too much, if anything. I was pretty devastated when I realised I hated ST upon release. And for the same reason. How could my favourite band let me down so badly?
I never wanted to feel that way again, so now I'm like 'let pj be pj, it'll sound like it sounds like, no matter what I want'.

It's like your girlfriend or boyfriend. Don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed :)

Ewwww I felt like that with Band of Horses latest. I was so devistated. Luckily I've never felt that with Pearl Jam and I hope I never do but I've adopted you're same mentality because of the BoH debacle.

My attitude was also changed somewhere back around ST, to one of 'well at least ill always love them live'. I do 2-5 gigs eac time they're in Europe and that attitude has only been faulty twice but overall I still love seeing them live, cos I don't even listen to them that often during downtime.

Yeah, the last BOH left me cold too. Great live band though.
Bands are gonna do their own thing, follow their muse or whatever. A Great band makes themselves happy and if we all get it, all to the good. If we don't? We can get fucked.
Look at Neil Young. Always did his own thing.
