I'd pick "Remain In Light" over "Fear of Music," Joey. It's of "best ever" vintage.

Unless Ruddo comes in here and demands differently, that'll be the next one I grab.

"Fear of Music" is great though. "Life During Wartime" is probably my favorite Heads tune (I don't know the later albums very well though).

Re: Discovering a Large Discography
Talking Heads 77 through Remain In Light is an unbeatable run of 4 albums.
Remain is absolutely an all-time great album & probably the one that ends up being their masterpiece. That said, I put on Fear Of Music more often lately. Can't go wrong with either, really. And whoever said that you eventually make it to their live albums & can play them forever is totally right.

Again, my list wasn't ranking them. Was more a guide to discovering the Talking Heads. Remain in Light is probably my favorite.durdencommatyler wrote:PICK ONE FOR ME DAVISKevin Davis wrote:I like "Fear of Music" and "Remain In Light" best.

Oh, I know. I just wondered if you thought that was a good next step for me given the Talking Heads albums that I already have and adore.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Again, my list wasn't ranking them. Talking Heads:
The first three albums and the first disc of the live album are flawless.
...but they lose me with "Remain In Light". "Once In A Lifetime" is brilliant...but most of it puts me to sleep. I don't like the tarted up live band either. If there is one band that didn't need to go over-the-top with supplemental musicians, it's Talking Heads. The Police are another one like that. Disappeared up their own asses.

Re: Discovering a Large Discography
It's weird how much I've tried over the years to make myself like Neil (all those albums were bought, not torrented) and only within the last year and a half did I come to realize what he's all about.
Almost the same with Bowie, but I liked a lot of his stuff already before diving deeper into the catalog.
When I get into a new band I try to get everything and listen to the albums in order so I can hear the progression from album to album. It's hard with some - Iggy Pop, for example - because of the complete genre jumps each album brings you. Same as Neil, I guess.
Also I wouldn't say I'm lukewarm on him anymore. I've gotten into Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, and some of his other endeavors because of how much I came to enjoy his music.
That's not to say I like his new band: That Monsanto album is not good.

Re: Discovering a Large Discography
Totally agree with this. I did some jumping around with R.E.M. before I started all over at the beginning, and I just felt like the chronological storyline that happens with that band (everything from Michael Stipe's development as a lyricist to sound development, to lineup changes) is the best way to understand and appreciate the greatness that is R.E.M.tragabigzanda wrote:Yea, I think REM is another start-from-the-beginning band.cutuphalfdead wrote:I went with REM chronologically and that worked great.tragabigzanda wrote:I think that before proper guidance can be offered, we need to know whose discography Leatherhead is checking out. For example, if it were Fugazi, I'd say start somewhere in the middle. If it were Bill Callahan, I'd say start somewhere around 2000. But if it were Sonic Youth, I'd say start at the beginning.cutuphalfdead wrote:Sometimes. Do you want to listen chronologically?
