Nooooooo you were one of few that made sense. ...

WTF cares about 'sense'? Sense is boring and depressing. I'm going to like what I like and dislike what I dislike about this album, but I've got good reason (I think) to expect it to be more my thing than Backspacer. But I liked Backspacer, and half of S/T, and I loved Riot Act. So PJ still have my heart, even if I get really pissed off with that ol' battleaxe occasionally.

Personally I think the downfall of Pearl Jam has been greatly exaggerated. Someone posted somewhere touching the subject (maybe it was you harmless) but I think my age has a big part in it. I don't tie music in to my life nearly as much as I used to so no matter how good it is I don't think a cd will ever be as impact full as it would have been as a teenager. Songs and CDs still help with moments here and there but as a whole they hit far less. That along with my musical tastes, world views, general awareness and knowledge expanding I don't look to pearl jam to be that force any more.

That's kind of important for me as well, I think. I want PJ to be good. But I don't *need* them to be good as I used to. I've got other things that fuel me in my life now (albeit not as much as I'd like, but I'm working on it). I guess this is why I'm thinking I just want to quite like it, that's all. If it's not terrible at least it has a chance to grow. I'm thinking of how I felt when I first heard Been Away Too Long by Soundgarden: "Meh." But it, along with the album (and Non-State Actor, my least favourite song) has become an album I listen to quite a lot. So I won't be too worried about a "Meh" reaction.

I had a discussion with a good friend about King Animal recently. He was suprised I ended up liking it because I was down on it initially. King Animal like The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here really are by the book albums for each respective group. They are easy listens because neither album is pushing the bands sound too far. I find myself disliking each album after going back and listening to older albums because like Pearl Jam , the 90's stuff is so damn good.
