Re: What movies are you watching?
Calling La La Land anything resembling "indie" is laugh-out-loud hilarious and off the mark

You could probably argue the "twee cuteness" point. But all the rest of those descriptors are pretty off the mark, really. But whatever.

I do NOT have a Roku player. I'll just put it on my Netflix queue.lennytheweedwhacker wrote:do you have a roku player, joey? tubi tv, a free channel available on there, has romance and cigarettes

Trag is right that Gosling can't really sing, but he's a surprisingly skilled piano player. Unless they CGI'd someone else's hands onto him.

A friend of mine wrote this and I agree with some of her points, even though I found a lot to love about the movie. http://www.seventh-row.com/2016/12/15/l ... -chazelle/

Apparently he played the piano in the majority of the film. Learned it in a few months.theplatypus wrote:Trag is right that Gosling can't really sing, but he's a surprisingly skilled piano player. Unless they CGI'd someone else's hands onto him.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Re: What movies are you watching?
He's playing most of it. But there is another guy playing some of the more complicated stuff. There's some tricky editing and post production magic at work. He sang and danced a lot when he was younger. He has training. I'm guessing he hasn't flexed those muscles much in a long while though. Which is part of the charm of the film, I think.theplatypus wrote:Trag is right that Gosling can't really sing, but he's a surprisingly skilled piano player. Emma, though. Emma can wail. She burned the fucking house down in Cabaret on Broadway. She's amazing. Though, again, they aren't asking her to be that singer in this movie.

It isn't just the shallow judgments, though. It's the flat out false statements.tragabigzanda wrote:No, but I'm totally content in my shallow judgment all the same.durdencommatyler wrote:Are you sure you know anything about this movie, trag?tragabigzanda wrote:I hate that two obscenely wealthy and attractive movie stars, neither of whom know how to dance or sing, are being paid millions to play wannabe movie stars who know how to dance and sing.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Twee cuteness. Once was made for less than $100,000 and the two leads did actually fall in love.
Though la la land is somehow being pitched or perceived as an indie film. Which is fuckin wrong.
Calibrate your enthusiasm

I meant "movie love" as "Look how much I love movies!" which in reference to La La Land.durdencommatyler wrote:oh and there's the small matter of Once not being about lovers. Re: What movies are you watching?
I havent seen it but it feels as "new " as another marvel sequel. From the obvious casting choices to the music and directing.
I loved Whiplash and thats the reason i will see it, but all this sudden love for a movie like this smells like a marketing job well done.

The marketing for La La Land is nauseating, but that doesn't mean we should pass judgment on the movie itself (even though it is also probably nauseating).
Please consider voting for me

What love? Everybody is suspicious of and hates this movie before they see it!VinylGuy wrote:I havent seen it but it feels as "new " as another marvel sequel. From the obvious casting choices to the music and directing.

If anything the marketing backfired. The movie is not what people think it is. Or it is and they hate it. It's bizarre.
