What movies are you watching?

Watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople over the weekend, had to search for posts.

Today I watched two movies: The Greasy Strangler and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (hi, New Zealand!). Neither was great, but each had a few things about them that I liked. The aesthetic of Greasy Strangler wasn't necessarily unique, but it was consistent and felt like its own world in a very quirky way. I especially liked how the film used repetition--whether it was in shots, like the father in the carwash, or in language, like the "disco cutie" line or how so many characters had "Big" before their name. I thought the ending was a bit out-of-place; for how "weird" the movie was, the characters had real weight and motivations. Giving it the super-surreal ending that it had wasn't satisfying. Wilderpeople was one of those movies that had a number of good performances--Sam Neill was great--and had an interesting idea at the core of its plot, but there were some missteps that slowed it down. I thought the social services character was almost entirely unnecessary: her over-the-top, broad comedic performance didn't match up with the wit and heart the rest of the film had, and if you cut her out, it could be like 20 minutes shorter and much tighter. Good overall, though.

I felt like the SS character was supposed to be funny in the way she did all of this just for one kid. I mean, getting the military involved? That was funny.

Also finally got around to watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople - what a great film! I do wonder how well a lot of it would translate to an international audience though

I thought it was great, I love that humor. We were looking through Google Play and watched the trailer and we all busted up at the Lord of the Rings joke, that was the part where my wife said, "Yeah, we're watching this one."

I was laughing so hard...fucking great.

Bought the book because I've been reading a lot this part year and it looked like a good read.

Trivia bit: The book is Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. The red Toyota truck they drove was called Crumpy.



That would be Barry Crump, driving a red Toyota. Also the city slicker was in the movie as well.

Bad Moms - funny in parts, but I just dont buy Mila Kunis as a frumpy, tired, overworked executive / office mom, who is still a perfect parent at home despite her shitty husband.

But was it progressive?

is it important?

I know, right? Clicked that there "Trivia" link on imdb. But seriously, I wouldn't have done the research if I wasn't impressed with the movie and story. I gotta tell you, I have a lot of faith in the new Thor movie after watching this.

I also liked it more than What We Do in the Shadows.

The Accountant was a much, much better movie than I was expecting. Am I...am I starting to like Ben Affleck as an actor?!

Really enjoyed both of them (I think, but I'm not 100% sure yet). My wife and I had one of the best film discussions we've ever had after seeing Jackie. Even if, after giving it careful thought, it turns out I didn't like Jackie all that much, I'll always love the movie for the conversation it inspired. That was fucking cool.

We talked a lot about how shots were framed (how oddly or poorly) and why and if the director was intentional or if there were other reasons (like Natalie's best take, etc). And then we talked about whether or not those choices worked. We talked a lot about history and perception and intercutting actual footage with story/film/new footage. We talked a lot about musicals v operas and the way music was used in the film. We talked of Hamilton and "who lives, who dies, who tells your story?"

It was fantastic. And all of it was valid and derived directly from what we saw on screen in Jackie.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

he was better than i expected based on the trailer, though i do think there are plenty of other actors who would have made that role more interesting...i think he's definitely improved as an actor
