I like Roxy Music a lot, DV -- I had a thread for them, possibly on the old board. "For Your Pleasure" is my favorite album, and "Just Like You" (from "Stranded") is probably my favorite song.

Not sure if your comment nods to this but Eno was actually a member of Roxy Music for their first two records.

Yeah, I knew he was a member and knowing he was not on the album I got, I could still clearly hear his influence. I'll check out those other albums at some point, after I work my way through 'Country Life'. What do you think of "The Thrill Of It All"? It's a strong opener and got me hooked right off the bat.

"The Thrill of It All" is fantastic. The whole first half of "Country Life" is great -- never was able to get into the second half as much, but it's been a while so it may strike me differently now.

But after recently falling in love with Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, and Steely Dan, I'm hungry for more. Where should I go from here? I'm thinking about checking out Yes and Peter Gabriel next, but guidance would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are leaning towards prog rock and / or glam rock? If so, some early Genesis may be good for you to check out. Yes would be a little more accessible I think. Genesis gets flat out weird in the early days. Some Rush could even work. Honestly, I'm not that into prog rock. I only know the basics.

If it's glam you are looking for, the band KD and I are chatting about, Roxy Music may fit the bill. That along with some solo Lou Reed, David Bowie, Brian Eno, and even some Kinks will all work.

If you are looking from some early alt rock, check out Television, and some of the bands that played the early days at CBGB's.

Haha, oddly prog rock is exactly what I DON'T really want, despite my interest in Yes. I'm mildly familiar with Roxy Music and Rush, but it's been a while. Very familiar with Bowie and Reed already.

What I really want is some more classic soft rock with a dose of weirdness or complexity, like Fleetwood Mac or Steely Dan.

I definitely will check out Genesis, though. That seems like a good call. And I've never heard any Television, so I'll try them too.

My wife is addicted to the new show Lip Sync Battle, and the intro is T. Rex's "20th Century Boy". It's quite a catchy tune and it's pretty much been stuck in my head for like two weeks now.

Thanks for this. Really liking the album, and it lead me down exactly the kind of rabbit hole I was looking for, leading to the likes of Chris Rea, John Martyn, and Ned Doheny. Exactly what I'm looking for!

I think he sounds like Steven Tyler sounds. Its everything past that where the drugs and partying starts taking its toll then he turns into his version of Eddie Vedder.
