12/10/16: John Cena/Maren Morris

Cold open is uncharacteristically short. I love the Kellyanne Conway character. The Walter White cameo is fun for about 30 seconds, but nothing really funny comes from it.

Monologue. Bobby Moynihan is great as a wrestler named The Waddler. Leslie Jones is less funny to me, but the crowd loves her. John Cena is starting to look old.

Hook a Hunk. Pretty one-note premise, but they make it work. I love when Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney tackle a couple oddball characters together. But two guys kissing? Is that still considered funny?

Karate Kid was stupid.

Student Presentations was one of the worst skits I've ever seen.

Dyke & Fats Save Christmas was fun, but not as good as their first appearance. My favorite part of this episode was when Kate McKinnon tosses the pencils in the air, which is not saying much.

Is Maren Morris just the stage name for Selena Gomez's country act?

Weekend Update. The NBC joke was a step in the right direction for their political humor going forward.

Where'd Your Money Go? was dumb.

Office Christmas Party was dumb.

Trump's World was...I don't know what that was.

Selena Gomez is really committing to this new country singer character; that skull tattoo looks totally real.

Book Store was awful. $10 says Villasenor doesn't come back next season.

United States of Talent was awful.

This season is a train wreck.

The NBC joke was solid, i laughed pretty hard at that one - but the rest of the episode was pretty awful.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

12/17/16 Casey Affleck/Chance the Rapper

Trump Cold Open: These are getting better. I like the mean-spiritedness behind it.

Monologue: This is a solid B monologue. It's funny, and Casey shutting down repeated attempts to get him to sing made me chuckle.

Dunkin' Donuts: A+. I expect this will go viral.

Microsoft Tech Expo: This somehow played out funnier than the premise would sound on paper.

Last Xmas Rap: Entertaining enough. Mrs. Trag liked it a lot.

Religious Experience: This character is always welcome in an episode. This time it was worth it just for the "hog-taker and log-maker" line.

Chance the Rapper #1: Great performance of a boring song.

Weekend Update: I love any joke at the expense of the New England Patriots. That Hamilton joke was deep shit. Nice Obama jab. Happy to see some jokes at Kanye's expense too. This edition of Update had more bite than the other episodes from this season combined. I love that they're taking shots at powerful people from across the political/social spectrum; hoping to see more of this.

New York Now: My whole family did a bunch of hokey local theater, so I loved this.

Hillary Clinton/Love Actually: This was sweet and touching and funny.

Chance the Rapper #2: Cool to see him playing piano, and the energy was again great, but the song was again very bland.

Santa's Elves: Casey looks so uncomfortable in this skit.

I Can't Believe It's a Bar Fight: This was odd and ill-conceived, but I chuckled a little.

This was a strong episode, despite the last couple skits and the dull musical performances. Casey really contributed to the Dunkin' Donuts skit, but otherwise wasn't very funny -- but he was game for whatever the cast threw at him, which is what you want out of a host that is not known for comedy. I've been rough on the writers this season, but they deserve the bulk of the credit for this entertaining episode.

Dunkin Donuts was by far the best thing they've done this season. Had to watch it a couple of times because we were laughing so much and we missed a few lines.

Religious Experience was good, but not as good as the character's previous appearances.

Weekend Update was horrible.

I Can't Believe It's a Bar Fight was pretty much the definition of a 12:50 skit, but way worse. What got cut so that his made it on the air??? Kyle Mooney is so bad in anything that's not his own pre-taped sketches, which are great.
