the music is great. The lyrics are terrible (although the vocal melody is fine). Eddie sounds too weak and thin, which is surprising because I think he sounds good on the similar songs that surround it.
Get Right is great and fun and rocks. Three things PJ seldom put together.
Got Some I really like, but again, those lyrics sound pretty placeholder.
I too really like Amongst The Waves and I'm convinced that anyone that hates it is not really listening.

i think in general people like it. maybe its just relative b/c most of that album blows
I liked it before the album release but then again I don't think the album blows.
I was thinking this morning .... I think I like Amongst the Waves better than Given to Fly. Fuck me in the brain.
Amongst the Waves has a lot of potential, it just sounds like shit on the record. Why are the guitars so quiet during the chorus?
I don't get why they have to be any louder, but then I'm not a guitarist. It seems to me that a lot of people dislike certain new PJ based on the guitar, whereas because I've never really listened to the guitar (it's just there for me, and I'm not fussy about it) I've generally been fine with songs like ATW.

That's one song where Matt isn't smashing the drums and cymbals until the end, but rather than thinking he should, I think it works that he doesn't. I've written about it before on my drummer's POV review of Backspacer, but yeah... it's groovy. Which means that if the guitars sit behind that groove for the chorus rather than being more prominent, it works.

underneath all that awful awful song quality obviously. i'm intrigued.
It does doesn't it?! I am convinced that this will still sound heaiver than most of their catalog even once we hear a proper version.
Formerly Frank the Bunny.

The guitars throughout Backspacer are more complimentary than primary. Overall I think the Album was made to be driven by Matt and Jeff musically
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

Against the Waves sounds like a band two decades into their careers trying to recreate a former sound. Ed sounds awful on it as well.
Amongst*. And I never agreed with this. What prior sound is it trying to create? I think it's referencing a former sound and adding a more groovy rhythm and a subtler approach to the guitars. To say it tries to be an old song and fails is silly.

for me, I take issue with the guitar on Backspacer, but not on s/t. s/t guitars can rock, backspacer guitars really can't (unless in a unique for PJ role like in Got Some).

Yup. And maybe people who aren't as interested in the subtleties of the rhythm section won't be as interested in the album.
