Listened to 'Fables' today. Pretty solid album, and it's one I tend to overlook. I normally go for Reckoning, Life's Rich Pageant, and Document when I listen to their earlier stuff.

The stand out songs for me:

Driver 8
Life And How I Like To Live It
Can't Get There From Here
Green Crow The Rushes
Auctioneer (Another Engine)

I think its a really solid album, every song is good.
Wendell Gee is my favorite and maybe top 10 overall for me.

Wendell Gee is a solid one for sure. I'm not sure it it makes my top 10, but I definitely like it. "Auctioneer", "Green Grow The Rushes" and "Can't Get There From Here" were all better than I remembered; I really enjoyed those three this last round. Yeah, overall it's a really good album and I need to listen to it more.

i think the opening of fables (gravity and maps) might be the weakest stretch. this is an unassumingly brillant album

I think if I were to recommend an REM release to a serious music fan who isn't familiar with their IRS-era stuff (does that person even exist?), I'd go with Chronic Town. The five songs on this are a near-perfect showcase of everything I think this band did well in the 80's, and the length of the EP is just right. My favorite front-to-back thing that REM has ever done.

I think you should give him the 'eponymous' compilation. Still the best IRS-years compilation around, out of at least 5 orso ;)
