I guess I just don't see what the point is, really, outside of solidarity. I appreciate that, but I don't think it's going to do any political good.

Whether Trump supporters have grievances built in by real circumstances or not, they have shown us that no nation yet imagined has developed a populous fully protected from the group-think that allows false narratives to flourish. There are dozens of easily-disproved "stories" out there that more than half of them believe. And all of those stories are aimed at demonizing one "other" or another.

So much of their manipulated worldview has centered on the idea that they are the secret, silent majority that volume is now key. Demonstrations are necessarily part of the underwriting. You can see that in social media's Trumpbot freak out today, and in Sean Spicer's sulk. And it's hard not to notice that the media stopped discussing "why Trump won" today and started discussing, for the first time, just how preposterous and alarming his choices were.

They don't really need to do all that much or convince all that many people. I agree that they are not going to convince most Trump supporters; we are just not a country that will ever see a Reagan/Mondale-esque landslide again, we're too polarized. But more than three million people voted for the other candidate and the margins that Trump won by in the states he carried were fairly small. If Trump is unable to boost his popularity and expand his base, all the Dems need to do is get a few more people out to vote who were unwilling to cast a ballot for Clinton or get just a few Trump voters to switch sides. Dems are in big trouble on the state level and in Congress, but Trump's surprise win doesn't really change the basic calculus that the Democrats will definitely have an opportunity to beat Trump in four years, regardless of the powers of incumbency.
