Sounds like a pretty foolish law.

RE: Why I say Trump's first week has been impressive: he's, more or less, immediately begun putting into action the things he said he would do. For all the criticism of politicians not following through on their campaign promises, it's quite odd to see that dynamic inverted with Trump. The stuff about crowd size etc is just a sideshow, I don't know if even he takes it seriously. His meeting with Theresa May seems to have gone very well.
It's great that he's following through with his heinous, murderous promises. Very impressive.
I'm encouraged by his support for strong borders, enforcement of immigration laws, etc.
Good lord, why?

Because we have so many bad hombres and terrorists pouring over our borders, waiting in the shadows and destroying our democracy and way of life.

Oh wait, no we dont.
Guys, I consider it very fundamental that a country can effectively control who enters it, who is allowed to stay in it, etc.

This has very little to do with "bad hombres" either - there are thousands, if not millions, of people who would love to live in the USA and I have no doubt the majority of them are good, sincere people with the best of intentions.
Trump's border talk is nothing but thinly veiled racism. He is intentionally inciting hatred toward POC, particularly Hispanics. The narrative is palpable, and it isn't new.

Predictably, I don't buy it.

Are all actions by a country to exert control over its borders necessarily racist? The whole point of a border is to exclude, to discriminate.

He is publishing a weekly list of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. He referred to immigrants as rapists. He used the phrase "bad hombres." How much more transparently awful can he be? That is building a false and hateful narrative if I've ever seen it.

Furthermore, America is not supposed to be a nation based on discriminating who gets to come in. Tired, poor, huddled masses, yada yada. This is USA 101.

With respect to the first, I don't necessarily find anything objectionable about that - as I said when it was discussed earlier, I might do depending on the amount of detail provided (I'd hate to see people acting as vigilantes, etc.)

With respect to the second two, I don't think you can necessarily equate comments made during the campaign to policy decisions. I've said before I think Trump is vulgar, crass and personally unpleasant, those are two clear examples of just that.

Just as its possible to support strong immigration and border policies and not bear any ill-will towards immigrants, it's possible to find some of Trump's policies and positions appealing without finding anything to like in his personality or public statements.

What is the purpose of making a point to publish a weekly list of crimes committed by illegal immigrants? What is the end game there? What result is that going to achieve, especially in a country full of racist people? Come on. These are people's lives we're talking about.

With respect to spenno, I'm not sure we can fault an outsider-looking-in for not having a real feel for what's happening here. I can imagine its easier to look at this entire situation with a more cold, clinical eye when theres a good amount of geopolitical detachment.

Then again, I didn't do a google search to learn Australia's stance on immigration either.

I was thinking the same thing earlier today. The whole campaign he said that he'd do these things. He didn't mince his words at all over any of this - and he got elected. Now people are upset that he's actually following through?

We were upset about the promises too
