musicians--how fast is this song, really? I kind of agree with Platy that it sounds slower than you'd think for this kind of song, but I wonder if that's cuz Eddie is not really screaming.

Re: Mind Your Manners
Listened a few times now. I don't hate it, not like I hated The Fixer. But I'm definitely more in the thodoks/Kevin Davis camp than the jorge/cameronia camp on this one. There could be some good songs on this record, who knows, but I'm not holding out great hope for that. That has nothing to do with the single, but more the track record of the last two albums.
But like Skitch said, if the whole album is like this then that is really going to suck. But if this is the modern day Lukin or Habit of the album (though I fucking love those songs) then at least their could be something salvageable with this album.
And I don't think what thodoks said was pretentious at all. I too long for the nuance that Pearl Jam once showed so well. What I'd give for even another Light Years at this point.

Re: Mind Your Manners
I usually hate this shade of Pearl Jam. Comatose, Spin the Black Circle, Habit, Gods' Dice, Blood... even Brain of J (to a different degree) are not usually songs that pull me in and lock me down. Hearing STBC for the first time really turned me off. I was not looking forward to Vitalogy at all after that guy. But I really can't get enough of MYM.
I've been listening to it on repeat for just under an hour now and I'm enamored. It seems to early to start garlanding the thing with crowns and jewels, but based on first impressions, this is the best Pearl Jam song of it's kind since Brain of J. And I like my initial, first impression even more.
And I'm just about ready to go ahead and say that I like this song more than at least 8 songs on Backspacer. Maybe all of Backspacer.

Even if the context does support the song, as hoped, and if it ages really well....I will never, ever be okay with saying "Mind Your Manners...off of Lightning Bolt."

Camerons drums kind of reign in how fast the guitars appear to be cranking as well. Its like the guitars are moving at punk speed but cameron and vedder are keeping it locked down. its where cameron is accenting his snare.

I think that it's because:stip wrote:musicians--how fast is this song, really? I kind of agree with Platy that it sounds slower than you'd think for this kind of song, but I wonder if that's cuz Eddie is not really screaming.
1) Matt is not a punk rock drummer. This isn't a Bad Religion song. Sadly, this kind of song will always be an attempt at one by PJ. It's a good attempt though.
2) Ed couldn't keep up with a faster song live, and I think that makes it feel 'veteran'. It's tuned at a key he'll be able to sing live (which makes me thrilled) and it's played at a pace that they can speed up if they want to, but there's no pressure to meet an unrealistic pace set on the record.

Re: Mind Your Manners
I've listened to it a few times on headphones now. It's a little more compressed (is that the word?) than I'd like, and it's not as spacious. But it's a generally no-frills kind of production which suits this kind of song. It does the job. I wonder whether other songs will take a different approach, or whether we'll get a classic rock production with no bells and whistles throughout.

I pretty much agree with Chud. I do like it a lot more than The Fixer (which I think is pretty good, in a kinda goofy way) and WWS (which is my least favorite Pearl Jam song) - It's definitely one of the better tries they've had at a song like this in quite a while, though.Heathen wrote:yeah, thiscutuphalfdead wrote:Listened a few times now. Re: Mind Your Manners
I've got an unfortunate feeling
I've been beaten down
I feel I'm done believing
And now the truth is coming out
What they take is more than a bow
They're taking your innocence and then they [something]
All alone they're singing
Mind your manners
I caught myself believing that I needed God
And if [something] is over then we sure could use him now
Tried my patience, my patience tried
This world's alone [something] makes me wanna cry
All alone they're singing
Mind your manners
(son of Satan? lol)
Self-realizing that I'm physically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve our mystery
Ride high around the corner
Could be bigger than ourselves
Wake and wither to the sky
Or we could something else
And along they're singing
Mind your manners
Always praying
Self-realizing that I'm physically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve our mystery
Ride high around the corner
Could be bigger than ourselves
Wake and wither to the sky
Or we could something else
Go to heaven, that's swell
How do you like your like your living Hell?

I really think i love this song already, but i don't wanna listen to it a ton, I've only listened 3 times, but will probably give another in an hour or so, i just don't wanna wear it out with so much time before the album is out
