Agh they reissued these two on vinyl a few years ago but haven't gotten to "...Is Terrified" and "!" yet, which is infuriating.

I used to have them on CD! Digitized them, then sold them. I sold Emergency & I for like $20 three years ago, people on eBay are insane.

Giving that new Brad Mehldau and Chris Thile record a spin. Really hitting the spot.

My problem is just that I can't find a decent quality mp3 version online. 128 is the best I could get and it's fuckin garbage. This is the Allman Brothers we are talking about. People need to show a little respect.

Beautiful.

Did you ever listen to Nickel Creek, KD? I'm unfamiliar with their music and only know Chris Thile through A Prairie Home Companion.

I was worried when I heard their lead guitarist left that the jangle would go with him. Definitely not the case here.

You know, I have listened to Nickel Creek, and I gotta say I never really cared for them. Bluegrass seems to be a perpetually unsatisfying genre for me -- if you could bottle its essence and experience it as this sort of vague musical concept, I think I'd really like it, but time and again, actual bluegrass artists just let me down. Either the songwriting is undercooked, or exists as background to the soloists, or too much responsibility is given to instruments with limited physical and emotional ranges -- I dunno, it's a lot of fun for a short while but I feel like it doesn't hold my interest for long. Nickel Creek also had that terminal "hot young bluegrass virtuosos!" vibe that came across in their music more than one would hope -- they seemed like from-the-cradle music school kids with a ton of technique but nothing to say. Thile was (is?) in another band post-Nickel Creek called Punch Brothers, which I've consistently confused with Avett Brothers and therefore avoided. But I enjoy his singing a lot on the Mehldau disc, and the mandolin playing is...as good as I can imagine mandolin playing being.

Nickel Creek's violinist Sara Watkins had some nice solo stuff though, in that girl-with-a-nice-voice-sings-unpretentious-if-somewhat-unremarkable-acoustic-music kind of way. She also played with the Decemberists on "The King is Dead," if memory serves.

Have you ever listened to Gillian Welch?

Only sporadically, trag -- though, interestingly, the lead single from that Thile/Mehldau album is a cover of "Scarlet Town."
