LV, regarding a 4k release, dime is right. It's star wars so they'll release shit multiple times. When is the Blu ray being released, btw? I

April 28th is what I've been seeing.

My thoughts after a second viewing:

-This movie is gorgeous.
-The ships, defense shield lock, and locations look like miniatures with incredible detail. They seem way more authentic than any CGI heavy film I can remember.
-Maybe because it is because I just read Catalyst, but I was much more attached to the Ersos' storyline this time around. The Galen hologram talking to Jyn cut with the Death Star ignition sequence was deftly done.
-The jumbled nature of the first half of the movie didn't bother me nearly as much. There were enough small character moments and come across much better the second time around.
-Cassian's speech to Jyn before they leave for Scariff is powerful, especially in light of the recent Trump crap.
-The Tarkin/Krennic interplay is tasty. I wasn't bothered by the CGI, it is impressive how close they were to nailing it.
-Holy crap this movie is gorgeous.

It's definitely better the second time. I was shocked and kind of appalled by it the first time.
But no doubt it's better with further views.
It's probably the best looking Star Wars film. Cinematography just so beautiful. From his big scale shots down to the first person perspective with people and with the ships.

Know I keep saying it but his biggest success here was shooting the x wing sequences so that they looked exactly like they fit with those in a new hope but somehow faster and more intense.

It hasn't sustained a rewatchability factor for me at all but I do really really like it now.
I love what they did with Tarkin and Leia and every scene Vader is in are just wonderful.
Just wish they'd lingered on the bacta tank shot and let us really see it was Anakin.

I dunno, the bacta tank reveal was just enough for me. You could see enough of Anakin while maintaining the mystery.

Nah even casual fans would know what the tank was about.

It is often forgotten that Vader is in constant pain in the suit. There are needles and implants that go into his flesh every time he has it on. It was cool that they showed him needing to recouperate.

My point is, if they truly intended to make a standalone Star Wars movie, then it should stand strong on its own. I loved the hell out of this movie, but it frequently slipped into the saga films at the expense of their stated intention.

It's very clearly not meant to stand completely on its own.

My point is, if they truly intended to make a standalone Star Wars movie, then it should stand strong on its own. I loved the hell out of this movie, but it frequently slipped into the saga films at the expense of their stated intention.

Well my pal made that point better than I. This truly isn't a standalone. For a thousand reasons it needs you to know about Star Wars and really only is a vehicle into a new hope. It doesn't stand on its own strengths as a seperate film at all.

No, but in ESB its narrative purpose is self-evident: Luke has been wounded, he looks like shit, it's obviously healing him.

If someone had not seen ESB before R1, then they are stupid and deserve no explanation for the bacta tank.

So of all the people that saw this, how many do you think actually didn't see other Star Wars movies and didn't know what was going on? Clearly the majority saw ESB and Luke in a tank. For sure. But my wife is new to the Star Wars world (she started with TFA), and is just getting caught up on the saga (I've strongly suggested she just skip the prequels). Watching R1 with that in mind has made me a little extra critical -- there are too many scenes when she has no idea what's going on or why they're showing what they're showing. I just find it to be sloppy, even if it only affects a minuscule amount of the viewers.

Which goes back to my point. This is a Star Wars movie. I think it was an assumption that a high majority of the viewers have seen at least episodes 4-6. Your wife, along with a few others are probably in a small minority that did not see at least ANH before R1.
