I might watch Jack Reacher one of these days. But the trailers looked so fucking stupid.
Verm got me thinking about Tom Cruise. I'm going to use this thread as an opportunity to rank/rate his films that I've seen. I'm going to rank them in order. Then off to the side I'm going to give two grades: one for Tom and one for the film itself. The Tom grade will be 1-5 (five being best) and the film's grade will be an academic type letter grade...
List to come. One minute please...

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Jack Reacher has an idiosyncratic script, clearly influenced by the quick banter of 1940s Hollywood. McQuarrie loves that shit. But, above all, I think the direction of that movie is fucking brilliant. Incredibly clean, efficient, calculated, subtle - just altogether wonderful. It's a masterclass of genre craftsmanship.tragabigzanda wrote:Tom Cruise is a terrific actor, when the material is right for him. Jack Reacher is just an embarrassingly awful script -- one of those movies that made me think "They still write screenplays like this in Hollywood? This thing sounds like it's been in turnaround limbo since 1991."

Shake all you want. Those are terrible films. Just terrible. And there's nothing out there that can convince me otherwise. I saw them. With my own eyes. Trump himself can tell me I'm wrong, but I fucking WATCHED them.LoathedVermin72 wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:War of the Worlds (1/D-)

War of the Worlds is one of the most vital American works of art in the last 20 years.

Samantha Morton was outstanding in it, though. She was far and away the best part of the movie.durdencommatyler wrote:It's so stupid.wease wrote:You didn't like Minority Report?

I can't imagine what opportunities were missed? All things considered, it's probably the single best movie made about 9/11.durdencommatyler wrote:I'm sure you'll love War of the Worlds. I'm being a tad overly dramatic because it's a slow Saturday. I should watch Collateral again, honestly. I didn't care for it but I'm sure I missed some of the nuance. And Cruise honestly didn't bother me, from what I remember. You may very well be right and I'll eat a ton of crow once I watch it again.
My previous list was off the top of my head. I reserve the right to change my mind. But I really do remember thinking that the performance was flat and then OVER THE TOP and then flat and then OVER THE TOP and the WIG!
I should see it again. I just hate Michael Mann so much.
