Not exactly what the thread asks for, but not long ago I did a count of my collection by artist, mainly out of curiosity over whether any artist's prominence in my music collection correlates with (a) how much I actually listen to them, and (b) how much I anecdotally say that I like them. These numbers reflect actual albums, not individual discs. It's not an exact ranking (some artists I really like just have small discographies) but directionally it's pretty close. It was a fun geek experiment in any case. Everything 10 and above:
Spoiler: show
Pearl Jam - 109
Miles Davis - 63
Neil Young - 55
Bob Dylan - 53
Grateful Dead - 47
John Coltrane - 33
Elvis Costello - 30
Bruce Springsteen - 29
Brad Mehldau - 26
Van Morrison - 24
Thelonious Monk - 23
Tom Waits - 23
Frank Sinatra - 22
The Beatles - 19
Leonard Cohen - 18
Mogwai - 18
REM - 18
U2 - 18
Sonny Rollins - 17
Sonic Youth - 16
Johnny Cash - 15
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 14
Pink Floyd - 14
Wilco - 14
Nick Cave - 13
Bill Frisell - 13
The Decemberists - 12
Duke Ellington - 12
Paul Weller - 12
David Bowie - 11
Death Cab for Cutie - 10
Led Zeppelin - 10
Nirvana - 10
The Who - 10

Is this allowed? Because if so, I'll add:

Jimi Hendrix (everything of his that I'm familiar with, though I'm sure there's way more out there that I don't know)

I feel like this list would be very short for me right now. Would I be able to live without hearing my favorite "legacy" artists like Pearl Jam or Radiohead or Led Zeppelin again? Yes. I love them, but it's not like I need to listen to them all the time anymore.

Also, a lot of my most essential listening these days is album specific. I don't need the artist's full catalog.

So, all of that considered, I think that leaves me with a total of three artists I feel like I really need:

Kanye West
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Acid Bath
