The more I listened to it the more I hear Gonna See My Friend in it, though I still think it has a bit of a Self Titled feel as well.

But boring is the best word for it.

It's better than Spin the Black Circle
That's a ridiculous notion.
Yeah that's straight up absurd.

Im not ready to say its better then anything else yet, but i wouldn't call it bland at all, but as usual it is all opinion
Its no STBC, lets not get crazy. I think its a more successful pop-punk thing than Backspacer was, though. Its got just enough edge and pace to be entertaining for me.

edit: i dont really consider them comparable, really.

This.
STBC is by far my least favorite song on Vitalogy, so much so it is the only track I skip. Just a twenty something screaming about fucking records. I don't find MYM bland at all. It's not changing the world but the performance is tight and well executed. Ed sounds good and staying in areas he should and I love the lyrics. I'm not versed in too much 80s punk so I could care less if it is "neutered". The bridge is fantastic.

I really like the first minute of the song and the outro, the middle i'm kinda eh on. They could have only done the bridge thing once and i wouldn't have minded.

They're comparable in that they're upbeat punk rock songs, except one is exciting and energetic and the other one sounds like The Offspring.

If they have detuned songs on the album I wonder if that will give the whole thing an overall darker and more agressive vibe. I really dig this song still too.

Hey guys, it's not worth arguing over. This will be settled definitively when MYM either does or does not win the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance next January.

This song is the reason for the GA pits.

Also, it's better than I had expected after the whole Ole! debacle. Too punk to be a "classic" pearl jam song, but should be great live if they loosen it up a bit. Sounded great in the car on PJ radio.

I liked-not loved-it but that may have had something to do with listening to new music from Pearl Jam after a really long time. I hope it's not indicative as to how the rest of the album is going to sound like.

I think this is the main issue I've got it. It's a bit less the song than how they did it. I personally wouldn't go as far as to say it's neutered but that's barking up the right tree. It sounds like it should be more vicious than it is.

I'm not listening with a trained musical ear, mind you. And I'm not holding either of them up against other songs of the same/similar genre. I'm looking at each of them in a vacuum. Lyrically, the subject matter is more interesting to me in MYM. I love how much is happening in the song. It moves and shifts it very appealing ways, I think. I love the way Ed sounds. The guitar interplay is rubbing me the right way, even if it's bland to some.

STBC is screechy and harder to listen to. It's less polished, sure, but it's also based on, what I think is, a pretty dipshit metaphor. I like the vocal melody, the vocal layering, and the call and response of MYM better than the over-earnest, shove that Grammy up your ass, tongue in cheek howl Ed's rocking in STBC. And STBC circle dissolves to noise pretty quickly. They did this sort of thing a few times before STBC and did it better in my opinion.

Now, when I'm in the mood for it, or when I'm listening to Vitalogy front to back, it's a juicy, well timed slice of power-punk rock that hits my gut and keeps running before I have time to ID the bastard. Which is awesome. As I said, it's grown on me quite a bit. MYM is still too new to call "better than STBC." But I like my first impression better. MYM is a more listenable song. Which maybe means it's too easy. Which maybe means it's not as good. I don't know. But I fucking love it.

Just giving my perspective. I'm fine with disagreement for there is enough Pearl Jam to go around.

I understand the comparisons but I really think STBC and MYM are drawing on different influences and trying to do different things.

Thejambi, I served with Spin The Black Circle. I knew Spin The Black Circle. Spin The Black Circle was a friend of mine. MYM, you're no Spin The Black Circle.
