I don't hear this one as especially punk influenced, at least not exclusively. I get much more of late 70s/early 80s hard rock thing - particularly that blistering solo.* This simply has to be the famed Motörhead-esque song.

Whoever said "Lightning Bolt" sounds like a Dio album title is right...and isn't that fucking awesome? I love it. These guys are doing a lot to make me happy lately.

(* yes, I realise that music was a huge influence over what developed into 80s punk.)

I still say..that with a title like Lightning Bolt, you are better off just putting the album out sans title and with the artwork, let the fandom call it what it will. That way calling it Lightning Bolt is our fault!

I know this is very cynical of me, but I can't help but think that some people are kind of forcing themselves to like this song. I think if you presented this same song with a different singer (say a Bob Mould or a Greg? Graffin) to a bunch of Pearl Jam fans, most of them would go "meh."

Not only that, but if everything about this song remained unchanged, including the music, Eddie's voice, etc., and you were to hear this song for the first time and the band Pearl Jam never existed, people would think "meh."

Totally agreed. AND if you just left the song as is, but humans didn't have ears and alligators made music, people would scrawl something on their hand like Helen Keller and then the alligators would eat them.

Every song isn't meant to be a tour de force or a chart topper. Every song doesn't need to impact you the same way as another or carry the same weight.
Sometimes the relationship you have with a band and its catalog creates the appreciation for a song. In 98 DTE probably wouldn't have brought me in to PJ if I hadn't already been a fan and its one of my favorites.

I can't see this being better than Save You live but we will see. I wish the lighter part of MYM were a little more interesting (think poor girl) or a little darker.

I really like comatose live, at least live in person, ed may not sound great on a boot, but it works really well live
