I am not what you would call a loyal fan. I dont care if you've just fed me twenty straight brilliant life altering songs, if the twenty first one sucks, it sucks. Track record just means I'll give it a shot, not that I'll like it more. I dont care that this is from Pearl Jam or anyone else. Its a fun little song.

Yep it's a good song but I'm sure the lightning bolt (like what i did there) is still to come somewhere within the other 11 songs. Usually I like 6 or 7 songs on the album better than the first single Pearl Jam puts out so I'm sure this will be the same.BurtReynolds wrote:I dont care if you've just fed me twenty straight brilliant life altering songs, if the twenty first one sucks, it sucks. Along these lines, that other music in the initial YouTube that everyone shit their collective diapers over is still OUT THERE ready to be on the new album!

Where did you get the silly idea that critical thought and enjoyment are two ropes tugging me in opposite directions? Like one needs to be turned off or diminished for the other to take over? That's not right.Strat wrote:theplatypus wrote:Yes, Strat, that's clearly what I'm saying. Thank you.Strat wrote:Do things need to pass through a mathematical equation for you to enjoy them?

You can subdue your critical analysis when taking part in such an emotional medium. That doesnt make you less able to accurately judge your enjoyment.
I like the song alright. I stated as such several times. I think it could be a lot better, and it's a huge missed opportunity. But, more than that, I wince at all the glowing reviews I read from people who otherwise trash talk the punk genre (which this song is very much rooted in, if not a blatant carbon copy of) and Eddie's interest therein. It feels disingenuous, and like the self-deceiving declarations of folks who are so hungry for new material, and so desperate to be wowed by this band again, that they'll take just about anything they can get. This is making a lot of really big assumptions about a lot of people, of course, but I can't help feeling that way, especially when I think back to the comments I remember reading some folks making about having to endure Bad Religion as openers. That, and I think the whole "any song is instantly better if it's Pearl Jam playing it" is a foolish way to approach music.

If you really like Pearl Jam, I think that's a perfectly valid approach.theplatypus wrote:That, and I think the whole "any song is instantly better if it's Pearl Jam playing it" is a foolish way to approach music.

im guessing i like the song more than you, but yeah, it remind me of Bad Religion, which is great for me.theplatypus wrote:Where did you get the silly idea that critical thought and enjoyment are two ropes tugging me in opposite directions? Thats why i agree with you, seems a lot of the comments of " yeah this ruuules" are just because this is a pearl jam song.
But again, we are all PJ fans, not BR ones so...whatever.

I'm not sure if it's good, but I do think it's inevitable. If I know PJ in and out and hear their version of a song vs. a version by a band I've never heard before, the PJ version will be more accessible to me.Birds in Hell wrote:If you really like Pearl Jam, I think that's a perfectly valid approach.theplatypus wrote:That, and I think the whole "any song is instantly better if it's Pearl Jam playing it" is a foolish way to approach music.

And PJ has always been a good gateway drug; if this gets more people actually listening to stuff like Husker Du instead of shrugging off PJ's punk stuff, that's a great thing to me.
