Allow me a total left turn but wanted to randomly shout out Mel Gaynor of Simple Minds.

This occurred to me as I was driving around, switching stations, when "Don't You (Forget About Me)" came on the radio. Like everyone else, I've heard this song a trillion times and connect it heavily to The Breakfast Club, so it has a lot of 80's baggage with it. But for whatever reason, this time I locked in on the drums. I've rarely heard someone play a seemingly basic pop track with so much energy. It takes the song the extra mile IMO. I encourage my RM brethren to lock in as well. Or tell me I'm insane.

Great drum track. It's pretty much the main reason I dig the tube.

I know punk isn't traditionally technical, but good drumming has always made or ruined a punk band for me, so I'd like to throw a few in the pool from the genre;

While these guys may not be on the "best ever" lists, they certainly impacted one of my favorite types of music.

hmm... 'Rock' , ex Bonham, Moon, Peart ...

well, I will leave out Mitch Mitchell because he was really more a Jazz drummer. But I love that man. Same with Ginger Baker. And I would also like to give a shout out to non-rock drummers Carlton Barrett, Billy Cobham, and Billy Martin whom I hold dear.

As 2016 RMer of the Year, Trag, has highlighted; as far as rock, selections would include Matt Cameron (Soundgarden only) and Brendan Canty (Fugazi). I would also throw an honorable mention in there to Steven Adler (pre-hot mess).

It probably isn't even fair to compare metal drummers to rock drummers. They're just on another level technically. 0:13 - 0:40 is one of my favorite stretches of music in history.

Two times in as may days Trag referenced Shellac in a post. Maybe I should give them a listen...

So this was a tad too intense for an introduction to the band. Something drew me to their second album instead, and I liked what I heard. The opener on that one is a great showcase for their drummer and the song itself happened to be right up my alley.

Also, no one has mentioned Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. I love that guy.

MATT TONG: saw Bloc Party years ago at the Congress Theater and this guy absolutely blew me away. He was the only thing I could watch for the whole show.

See, maybe he's improved since then, but I saw Bloc Party at a festival in 2008 and his drumming struck me as very limp and tentative. Of course, they played immediately after the Mars Volta who were playing with Thomas Pridgen at the time, and no drummer can sound good following that.

Wow "limp" and "tentative" would be the last two adjectives I would think of for the Tongster (my nickname for him). In fact, if you look those two words up in a thesaurus, "Matt Tong" is listed as an antonym for both.

It surprised me too. I liked Silent Alarm back in the day and knew that Bloc Party's sound required punchy, tight, locked-in drumming to be effective. But the guy sounded weak and kind of sloppy. Maybe he was having an off day, or like I said maybe he just couldn't help sound kind of feeble coming after this guy
