I just feel like Ed's voice lags behind the rest of the music. Maybe it's less his voice and more the awkward way the lyrics feel crammed in. It just doesn't sound natural to me.VinylGuy wrote:Strained? I can hear those STBC comparisons, but i feel its more similar to Comatose and DTE, specially in Ed´s vocal delivery..
Yeah he sounds awesome, his baritone is deep enough, he should sing like this more often.
And Mike´s solo is pretty amazing.
Ed's voice sounds strained and forced to me.
Mike's solo is just OK to me. It feels like take 1 or 2. You can do better Mikey!
As for Mike, what he does is exactly what the song needs. Its almost like an anti-solo, something this type of song needs, and his delivery is perfect.

No wonder McCready insisted this album is "way, waaaay better" than Backspacer!Strat wrote:That solo still cracks me up. Its all over the place and completely ridiculous.

Does feel like BOB let 'Cready out of the cage! no doubt.
Feels like the band is playing int he same room. That was a major issue I took with Backspacer. Never felt like the band was in the same room playing together but rather layering shit tons of parts on top of each other. Didnt feel very organic to me.

Agreed, I hope that feel is something that carries through to the rest of the album.Strat wrote:Birds in Hell wrote:No wonder McCready insisted this album is "way, waaaay better" than Backspacer!Strat wrote:That solo still cracks me up. Its all over the place and completely ridiculous.

I kind of hear that same thing with this song, unfortunately. The song itself isn't in the style of the Backspacer songs, but it feels like it could have been done at the same session.Strat wrote:Birds in Hell wrote:No wonder McCready insisted this album is "way, waaaay better" than Backspacer!Strat wrote:That solo still cracks me up. Re: Mind Your Manners
To me, that "band playing in a room" feel was immediately apparent on this song from first listen. It really sticks out as a conscious move away from some of the sonic approaches they took on Backspacer.

Re: Mind Your Manners
I just don't hear that personally, but it'll certainly help when the rest of the record gives context.
I think a big thing was that pause near the end going back into the last chorus feels really artifical; I can practically hear the mouse click.
That being said, though I don't like it, it's a relatively minor thing when in comparison to the song itself, which I'm liking more than I did this afternoon.

The more I listen to this the more I like it. It's a raggedy-ass grease fire. Fuck yeah.

If this is what The Offspring sound like now, then I've gotta get me some Offspring. I actually think parts of the song sound an awful lot like Rocket From The Crypt, a greaser rock/punk band that Matt likes.

Mind Your Manners: meh, Find Your Standards.
I don't love it, but I don't hate it.
At first blush, I cringed at the album title; at first blush, I cringed at the artwork; now I just wait until October 15, or earlier.
For now, I'll go back to ...Like Clockwork, and hope that something compelling/dark happens to the PJ boys so they can write something personal.

Hey didn't the drummer for Rocket From The Crypt end up joining The Offspring?Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:If this is what The Offspring sound like now, then I've gotta get me some Offspring.
