Unpopular Wilco opinion: "AM" and "Being There" are decent but ultimately average albums that would have faded into the bottomless abyss of Matt Pinfield-endorsed '90's records that no one gives a fuck about had "YHF" not given Wilco a proper cultural moment. They exemplify the phenomenon that records on the ascent toward a peak will almost always be more highly regarded than records on the descent from that same peak, even if the net quality of the two albums is relatively equal, sometimes even if the record on the down-slope is slightly stronger. See also: "The Bends."

Not only is Being There my favourite Wilco album, The Bends is my favourite RH album.

I can't help but feel like if Radiohead had disappeared after "The Bends," they'd have been remembered like Blind Melon -- a Time-Life '90's band with a massive hit single from an otherwise forgettable debut album and a less instantly recognizable but arguably artistically superior follow-up who are remembered fondly by '90's teenagers but whose unrealized potential ultimately causes no one sorrow. If they'd quit after "OK Computer," they'd be remembered like Neutral Milk Hotel -- geniuses gone too soon whose lead singer's every voyage outside the house is seen as cause for a Pitchfork op-ed piece. "The Bends" is an okay album, I just think it gets bonus points because we now know what it was pointing toward.

Wouldn't surprise me, that would have been around the same time that Oasis was selling a zillion records, so there were clearly some baseline defects in the Brits' perception of what constituted groundbreaking rock music in those days.

There are a lot of albums that were "massive" that have since been forgotten, or at the very least did nothing to advance the artist's cultural standing. I think so. If there was nothing else released then they would have still had relevance here. Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Pulp were huge here in the same way Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins were, and I'd say that Smashing Pumpkins is a good parallel. The Bends was about the same level of crazy as Mellon Collie.
