team pitchfork

i mean, yeah, they can be overly hyperbolic. but they actually review albums with detail rather than from the customary, 10,000-foot view of most critics.

I absolutely hate Pitchfork reviews and stopped reading them a while back. I got tired of having to slog through a 6,000 word essay that used the first 5,500 words to talk about life experiences or some personal bullshit. Typically I'd just skip to the last paragraph and get a synopsis or any information whatsoever about the album.

tragabigzanda wrote:But it's rarely useful detail. I always feel like I'm reading the musings of some wannabe writer who just got his fourth rejection letter from McSweeney's. Consequence of Sound offers relevant detail (background on the artist, that sort of thing) without any of the hyperbole or flowery nonsense.
Pitchfork has more readership and $$$ than McSweeney's so I assume they'd be happier lobbing obscure adjectives at vaporwave artists

I prefer reading flowery language than what amounts to a dry Wikipedia article about an album, but that's just me

Post the two or three Pitchfork reviews that embody why you hate/love them so much. I will read those before I decide whether or not I agree with trag.

Each side, make your best argument and we'll get to the bottom of this.

I don't think of reviews in terms of websites-- my favorite music writers write for a number of publications, and yes some of them contribute occasionally at Pitchfork-- so I wouldn't know how to approach this.

This was the correct answer. Thank you for playing. Your prize is in the mail. Expect it in 2-3 weeks.

I'm not sure I've ever read anything by that person. But I couldn't tell you the name of any single person I've ever read a music review by. I'm not really up (as the kids say) on critics. I don't think I could even name you one.

S'cool. He's a music writing legend. He tends to take a hard and minimalist look at music. I quite like him.
Why did The Village Voice fire him?

They probably couldn't afford him anymore

Christgau is great. He was the first music critic I could name. But I think even he would agree he is the very definition of "old-guard"
