stip wrote:Okay, in terms of what this song is about, here is my initial stab. The key is the second chorus. But before we get there, this song is about illusions. It's about trying to see past the veil that hides just how rapidly our world is falling apart. Learning to ignore the people who tell you there is no class conflict in the United States, who tell you that political protest and the aspiration for something better is rude, that it rocks the boat, that these people should learn to accept things the way they are and just go along with everyone else (think mainstream media reaction to Occupy Wall Street, for instance). That's the mind your manners part of the song. Just do what is expected of you. Well behaved people don't question. They don't cause trouble. The few religious references buttress this, but this isn't a song about religion, except insofar as religion is historically (especially in this country in this era) a tool for obedience.

Hence the muted siren at the start of the song. The suppression of alarm.

I think the chorus is the moment where the singer starts to realize that we have it within us to change this. The 'right around the corner could be bigger then ourselves and we could...something else (anything else) is the central lyric. It's a call to start imagining the possible. And if we don't we're stuck in the living hell he rails about at the end. These parts of the song are critical because the elevate the snark everywhere else. It gives it purpose.
Nice write up.

But I think this thing is seen entirely through a religious lens. This, to me, is about religious oppression and hypocrisy. Though, unfortunately, in this country politics and religion are hardly mutually exclusive.

And I'm really still doubting the "something else" bit. I'm just not hearing it. I'm hearing something more like "something real."

Let It Be is awesome. One of the best opening and one of the best closing cuts ever.
And one of the flat out best damn songs of all time.

LOOK ME IN THE EYE! :bammer:
Yeah that's favorite song ever territory for me.

I like the single - not anywhere near as bad as I was expecting. I think I only wish it were a bit more raw but I doubt it could be at this point in their career.

I ended up only listening 4 times today, and for me it got better each time through. Ill listen a few times tomorrow Im sure but i will try to put it away soon so its not worn out in October. I love the chorus or bridge, what ever its called and have from the first listen, and the rest has caught up to it on each listen, and from the first chorus/bridge to the end of the song is almost perfect. My feelings definitely might change over time as they do with a lot of their songs, but i think they did pretty damn good

it could just be religion. i think the religion stuff is the vehicle for the larger point, rather than the point itself, but I could be totally off on that. The album should make that clearer.

and I think you're right about something real. That's certainly a point for your take if it's accurate.

Good luck, i don't think we will ever try for tickets to an NY show, way too much demand, and we kinda like the idea of shows in less popular places.

I have no idea. I just wanted to get my thoughts out tonight. I just appreciate the conversation. And as you say, once we hear the whole album, some of this may become clearer. But it's entirely possible that I'm projecting, as what I think this song is about/is doing is near and dear to my heart. Maybe I WANT the song to be about that because that's what I agree with/can relate to.

whether MYM is a song about religion you can tease a larger point out of, or whether MYM has a larger point and uses religion to make it.

So nothing, really.

Everyone should know not to listen to Yield songs when wanting to enjoy anything else.
