Millenials dont like being made fun of. @snowflakes
I don't know, I'm the one associating this stuff to memories, many of them not good, and getting all emotional about it. Maybe I'm the snowflake?

You don't like Sigur Ros either, trag?
I used to really enjoy them, in the early-to-mid 2000s. But I find it to be pretty dull music these days, not sure why.
Yep, same. I just don't have the patience for it anymore. I'm not impressed by that kind of "atmospheric" noodling. I'm much more into immediate, structured, efficient songs these days.
That is an understandable and acceptable millenial response.
Yea but he loves steely dan and the eagles. Awful.
I do think that "atmospheric" is the key word for me. I rarely play my Boards of Canada albums any more, ditto Brian Eno, ditto Mum. Yet I still love Tortoise and Steve Reich, both of whom take a more compositional approach to their creation of atmosphere...

Meanwhile, Electric Boogie continues to rock my world with their repetitive stoner riffs. There's just something about the Sigur Ros sound that now strikes me as quite boring, where I once thought it was really amazing.
Again, exactly the same here. I loved post-rock and ambient and all that shit as a teenager, but I just feel no emotional pull there anymore.

:bammer: They are the sixth band I most want to see live, after Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi, and Fugazi. What're your favorite Tortoise records? Least favorite?
Well, my friend gave me a copy of Seneca years ago, and that is the album that got me into the band, so that always has a special place in my heart. But I also really love:

Tortoise
Standards
It's All Around You

Sigur Ros never did anything for me either, though it's been a while since I've tried to listen to them and there's a good chance I missed out on most of what people consider their best albums. Back in the day there was so much buzz around that "Hopelandic" thing, and it just seemed like a level of artsy preciousness that I could never take seriously. I tried listening to their first couple albums, and some of it was pretty but it just wasn't my thing.

Sigur Ros is the only time I had tickets in hand but couldn't make it to the concert.

At this point it's St. Vincent, maybe U2, and then a time machine. There are a lot of bands I'd love to see again, but I've seen everybody else I really love at least once, some 5x or more. Living in a major city with a thriving music scene and several excellent smaller venues helps this considerably.

Edit: I went to Sasquatch in 2007 and really enjoyed it, but only have memories of like 5-6 of the bands. But looking at this lineup now is surreal, since more than half the bands on the bill went on to become very popular, if not huge. But I managed to miss St. Vincent, who I did not know at all, because I was too busy grading papers at the Starbucks in Ellensburg.

I love Sigur Ros. I think at their best (Takk) they come up with beautiful melodies and really nicely orchestrated arrangements. The more loosely-woven "atmospheric" side of their music is nice but not what they do best. Basically from Agaetis Byrjun up to that album with the naked butts on the cover they were great. I still marvel at the string arrangement for "Staralfur" from time to time.
