My hope all along was that the title indicated plural, and I think a neat twist would be that there's more than the obvious two (Luke, Rey) Jedi remaining for this film and the next.

It's strange cos yoda fella luke he is the last of the Jedi.
Dave filloni has sad there were other Jedi hidden around the galaxy that escaped order 66

I think he's just giving himself a get out of jail free card for Ahsoka Ezra and kanan.

Well, there would kinda have to be wouldn't there? Luke was training other people to be Jedi. I don't remember it being mentioned that Kylo Solo killed all the other trainees a la Grandpa Vader.

Yeah kylo killed a 'clan'. Rumoured to be Reys people.

I think he convinced his fellow students to turn with him. And they're the knights of ren.

Kanan is the only one of those people who is a Jedi, though. And his is even kind of a technicality.

This is where shit gets tricky and technical, though. Just because one is a Force user does not make them a Jedi. The Jedi are a religious order. There are many steps one must got through, including being fully trained by a certified Jedi, to become a Jedi.

We don't know what Luke was up to for the last 30 years. Maybe he fully trained some students in that time and there are a few/several/many Jedi out there. Or it's possible he never fully trained anyone. Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) as far we know never became a Jedi. So Luke could well be the last true Jedi left.

The more I think about it, the more the title makes sense as singular. Seems to me if it was meant to be plural they would have called it Last of the Jedi or something like that. Calling it The Last Jedi is a blatant reference to Luke Skywalker. The movie is basically called Star Wars: Luke Skywalker.

It'll be interesting to see if Luke successfully trains Rey before he dies. If he dies.

Would you consider Ahsoka a Jedi? The other cultures she was in contact with in Clone Wars considered her a Jedi even though she was just a padawan. So it would seem that even in training, they were considered Jedi. Maybe not knights or masters, but still Jedi.

Sure, they call the younglings "Jedi" as well. I get what you're saying. If you're a member of the order you are Jedi to some degree. A Youngling Jedi. A Padawan Jedi. A Master Jedi. So, fine, yes. On that score they are "Jedi."

So, yeah, I guess the best way to differentiate is by using the full term: Jedi Knight. I think a lot of times the word Jedi is shorthand for Jedi Knight. Jedi is a pseudo-religious order. And there are ranks within the order: Youngling, Padawan, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master, etc. So, Ahsoka and Kanan and all of them are Jedi in the sense that they are at some point on the Jedi Knight training spectrum. But they are not members of the Jedi Order.

Luke was the last one trained within the Jedi Order. Maybe he's started a new Jedi Order. We don't know yet. But it wouldn't surprise me if he's abandoned that order himself and if he's going to start training people, he'll create a new Order. I wouldn't be surprised if "Jedi" is something that gets phased out of the Star War timeline. The Force and warriors/protectors who tap into and use the Force will always exist, though.

If that makes sense. It probably doesn't. I have no idea. The title is probably plural.
