I have not watched this. But you'll be hard pressed to turn me against any project featuring Amy Poehler. She's a national fucking treasure.

Phenomenal cast. Interesting premise. This has a high chance of being my favorite Malick flick so far. I'm all in. I will absolutely check this out. No question. SUPER excited for this.

Knight of Cups was the first Malick film I really disliked, and based on the trailer this seems like something similar. I absolutely love The Thin Red Line and The New World, but I don't know... there's just less and less structure in his films. I don't see the poetry in his films anymore either. I don't know what happened to the guy.

Interesting. So you've seen Badlands, Days Of Heaven, The Tree of Life and To The Wonder? What made TTRL so bad compared to the other films you've seen? Yeah I didn't like To The Wonder that much either, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Knight of Cups.

Berlinale: Mister Smith Sells Terrence Malick’s ‘Radegund’ to UGC for France (EXCLUSIVE)



A first territory sale goes down on one of the Berlinale’s high-profile titles

In a first — and key — territory sale, Mister Smith Entertainment has licensed Terrence Malick’s upcoming “Radegund,” a true story set during World War II, to UGC for France.

The deal was closed at the European Film Market, which runs concurrently with the Berlin Film Festival, by MSE’s David Garrett and UGC’s Thierry Decourcelle, who said Malick’s screenplay is “one of the strongest scripts we have read in recent years.”

Variety has had access to an exclusive first look photo to the film, for which buyer interest appears large. Marking Malick’s return to World War II two decades after “The Thin Red Line,” the English-language “Radegund” tells the true story of Franz Jaegerstaetter (played by August Diehl), an Austrian farmer who, after Germany annexed Austria in 1938, refused to fight for the Third Reich. Written by Malick, the story is told through a series of real wartime letters between Jaegerstaetter and his wife.

“This is Malick returning to the top of his game in the telling of an extraordinary true story which has great resonance in today’s moral climate,” Garrett said.

“Radegund” is currently in post-production and set for a 2017 release.

I'm a very different person now than I was when I saw it. I really need to revisit the film. It was the first Malick film that I saw. There were extenuating circumstances that made it an awful moving going experience, which didn't help my enjoyment of the film, itself. There were two scenes in the movie that I remember thinking were totally brilliant: Ben Chapman getting his letter and Sean Penn & Co storming that hill. Both of those sequences were outstanding. It's entirely possible that I'll see it again and fully appreciate it. I haven't seen it since it's original theatrical run.

Also, I'm not big on war movies in general.

Its a wonderful and complex movie, and even if its not your cup of tea, it a triumph of cinema.

My memory is that it's about 45 minutes of grass and trees. Another 45 minutes of over-the-head beating visual metaphor (birds in cages, etc), another 45 minutes of action sequences that are well shot. 25 minutes of Ben Chapman crying. Another 45 minutes of sad music over well lit but stagnant scenery. And about 2 minutes of George Clooney. Oh, yeah, and there's John Travolta!

But like I said, it's been a while.

I was just being snarky and having a little fun. Malick is a super talented guy. After seeing Badlands I completely changed my mind about him. Then Days of Heaven solidified him as a real master in my mind. Then Tree of Life was breathtaking and so completely moving... I've been meaning to revisit The Thin Red Line since seeing much of Malick's other work. While I have no idea if I'll love it, I do firmly believe I'll appreciate it more on second viewing. If nothing else I'm sure I'll more fully understand Malick's aesthetic and that will help tremendously.

In a sign of the ongoing power shift in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese’s $100-million gangster movie “The Irishman,” his ninth starring Robert De Niro, has been scooped up by Netflix, which is in the process of closing a deal to release the movie to its 93 million subscribers in 190 countries.

The movie was going to be backed by Paramount Pictures, but with its 12-year chairman Brad Grey heading out the door, Scorsese’s team put together another package. As someone close to the deal put it, “Scorsese’s movie is a risky deal, and Paramount is not in the position to take risks. This way, he can make the project he wants.”

We now live in a world where Netflix is in a better position than any major studio to make a Martin Scorsese-Robert DeNiro gangster movie. Netflix would not comment on the deal.

Steve Zaillian adapted “The Irishman” screenplay from Charles Brandt‘s book, “I Heard You Paint Houses,” which details the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a mob hitman whose illustrious career is today best known for a supposed involvement in the death of Jimmy Hoffa. The movie was first announced in 2008.

Paramount hedged its bets by picking up North American rights while foreign sales company Mexico’s Fabrica de Cine (“Silence”) put the movie up for auction at Cannes. In a bidding war with Lionsgate, Fox and Universal, “The Irishman” sold for $50 million to rising studio STX Entertainment. That was the price, because Scorsese’s rambunctious Leonardo DiCaprio comedy, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” was a global hit ($392 million).

Now, per their usual custom, Netflix is acquiring all world rights. That means STX is likely out, as is Media Asia, which picked up distribution rights for China. The movie has no official start date, but sources say it is aiming for 2019 release day-and-date with a limited Oscar-qualifying release.

Scorsese still has an overall feature deal with Paramount that runs through 2019. The studio released his last film, “Silence.”

In “The Irishman,” De Niro will be made to look 30 again by the effects masters at ILM, “Benjamin-Button”-style. His “Heat” co-star Al Pacino and other talent are still in negotiations. One possible boon for Scorsese: at Netflix, there will be no strictures on length.
