How can you tell other than the weird album art?
By listening to the lyrics.
I dunno. I hear (or read more accurately) the buzzwords but it just sounds muddled and unfocused to me.
The bridge and the outro seem to really obviously rail against those who would devalue existence on earth because they think it will lead to something else later ("Go to heaven/that's swell/how do you like it/living in hell"), something which may not even be there ("May not live another life"). Ed appears to be arguing a person can bring meaning to his or her existence without turning to a deity or other outside sources ("Self-realized & metaphysically redeemed").

Interesting. I disagree with that 100% but still interesting.

It'd be interesting if for once they followed their live flow and the ambient piece was track one, breaking out into MYM. Think we have confirmation MYM is track 2.

He hated it. Said it reminded him of his dog's farting.

Short answer: I love it.

Long answer: trawl through this. I've been posting about it, don't you worry.

Yeah I've come around to it. First song upon putting on the radio. That fm compression actually helped it I think hehe.

He's done a good job with the lyrics and he's singing in his range. It was always gonna live or die on ed, and he comes through.

I just wish the music followed the first 15 seconds, and not go into that punk timing but ill get over that.

I think it's more a ciggies-in-the-jean-jacket-top-pocket fast chug than it is a punk thrash. I get why people are instinctively labelling it another "Pearl Jam Goes Punk" excursion but I don't really agree.

I mean that I get a late 70s/early 80s hard rock/metal feel from the song, at least from everyone except Ed. Matt's galloping rhythm and Mike's screaming solo are totally appropriate for that context.

Interesting. I disagree with that 100% but still interesting.
If you haven't got a clue what the song is about, how can you disagree? That's what the song is about, thanks to the evidence we have of lyrics.

I don't think that PJ's attempts at punk so far have been punk but this one is, personally.

That's what I was hoping for as well but yeah. I'm fine with what we got. Another half-temp section would've been good.

That to me will set me up for a very iinteresting album.

I've got an unfortunate feeling
i've been beaten down
i feel i don't believe and now the truth is comin' out
what they take is more than a vow
they've taken your innocence and then they go around and burn and violate it

i'm only saying
mind your manners

i caught myself believing
that i needed god
and if it's out there somewhere
we sure could use it now

trying my patience
my patience's trying
this world don't know no better
and it makes me wanna cry

i'm only saying
mind your manners
someone say it

self-realized and metaphysically redeemed
may not live another life
may not solve a mystery
right around the corner
could be bigger than ourselves
we could will it to the sky
or we could something else

ya know, no one's sayin'
mind your manners
always praying

self-realized and metaphysically redeemed
may not live another life
may not solve a mystery
right around the corner
could be bigger than ourselves
we could will it to the sky
or we could something else

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

living in hell
That seems plausible. It's your take, dime?
No sir, saw it on Fb.
Given these lyrics and the artwork, it seems blatantly obvious that this is about religious fundamentalism, and everything American associated with that. It's got none of the annoying vagueness of Comatose.
