Good journalism is ultimately just a form of good research....and like good research, a single investigative piece is not worth all that much on its own, nor is it meant to.

But the question I would ask is:

What if Americans had distrusted the press when Murrey Marder was exposing McCarthy's witch hunt?

What if Americans had distrusted the media when David Halberstam was exposing the conditions in Vietnam?

What if Americans had distrusted the press when Seymour Hersh uncovered the My Lai massacre?

What if Americans had distrusted the media when Woodward and Bernstein were exposing Nixon?

What if the American public had distrusted the media when Bob Parry was uncovering the Iran-Contra affair?

What if Americans had distrusted the media when Don Barlett and James Steele were detailing the mishandling of nuclear waste?

Our history, as we know it, is broadly informed by journalists. Our choices and responses to events, over time, consistently bear the marks of this relationship. I see little difference between distrusting the media and distrusting research on the value of vaccinations.

White House Issues Details On ‘Person Of Interest’ In Swedish Terror Attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bannon/Trump Administration has released details on what they are calling a “person of interest” in the recent, tragic terror attack in Sweden. Though details of the attack are extremely scant at this hour, the FBI and CIA are currently looking for a person that think may have vital information in helping them track down not only the perpetrators of the attack, but such details as where and when it actually happened.

“Right now, all we know is Sweden,” Chief of Staff Reince Priebus told reporters, “is where the attack took place. But we don’t know if it was in Sweden City, Swedenfield, or Sweden Town. So obviously we’re on a hunt for details on top of details, and this guy we’re looking for right now may be the lynch pin to the entire investigation.”

Priebus said the sooner that authorities can get a hold of this person of interest, the sooner some answers may be gleaned. The man is described as being of average height with a large frame. His eye color is unknown, as his large, bushy eyebrows cover them up completely. He wears a head dress consistent with the people in his line of work from country. He speaks very little English, Priebus said, but they do have some intercepted recordings between the man and someone in the United States identified as only as “The Frog.”

Mr. Priebus shared a print out of one of the conversations between the person of interest and The Frog. Below is a transcript of that conversation.

PERSON OF INTEREST: Hurny, shmurny der flurr smurhn!

THE FROG: It’s, uh, certainly good to hear from you too. Been a long time.

This Twitter thread is super myopic. While his thoughts have a lot of merit, they assume one of two things:

1. The consumer of the Trump news is intelligent enough to think about politics, the news media, and any other relevant subjects with a high degree of understanding.

2. The consumer of the Trump news has enough time to research and fact-check what he's quoted as saying.

As the son of a woman who works all damn day, puts on the local 10pm news (the seedy, salacious news programming block in the US), and promptly falls asleep on the couch, I can tell you that not everyone has the time, nor the inclination, to double-check everything the president says.

Obviously US Presidents have always spun the truth to their liking, but Trump's behavior is on another level entirely. And your average US citizen should be able to take direct quotes from their President's mouth at relatively high face value. It is certainly not their inherent responsibility to dig deeper...

That guy's Tweet chain goes on to say "If Trump says X and clearly means Y, and you write 'Trump said X and that's not true', are you 'reporting facts'? I guess. Are you being honest, though?" This is such a larger issue in modern media: the point at which "news" crosses over into "editorializing." And for your "high journalistic integrity outlets" (NYTimes, CBS News, etc) to limit their deeper coverage of this president to their editorial sections would be woefully underserving that portion of the populace who ARE inclined to dig deeper.

Honestly, I think they now realize how ignorant of the ACA many of their voters are and know they will lose the next election cycle, if not destroy the party, should they actually try to take it down.
