Re: Song of the Moment: Rearview Mirror
i actually remember hating Even Flow. One of my best friends to this date always loved it and the video. I remember a specific moment being in my parents basement when the video came on and he told me i needed to love it. i didnt.
Yea, RVM I loved from the beginning. But that wasn't the beginning of my PJ Love.

I'm coming around again on it too. It had been a solid 5-10 years that I pretty much always skipped RVM (never hated it, just was kind of over it), then sometime during the last few months I started to dig it again. Solid 4 stars from me.stip wrote:I've completely fallen in love with this song again

That's interesting bc I was the exact same way. I just didn't want to listen to it. It wasn't from oversaturation by any means. It's almost like it was a little too much of a song. I love it, but it's not necessarily a comfortable listen.PHATJ wrote:I'm coming around again on it too. "It's almost like it was a little too much of a song." - This is a really interesting thought, and I think I have felt the same way.bodysnatcher wrote:That's interesting bc I was the exact same way. Yeah, that sounds exactly like my experience. I just never felt like listening to it. I actually have always felt quite similarly about Insignificance.

Never loved this song in a live setting. Ever. None of them touch the studio recording.tragabigzanda wrote:The live versions have been underwhelming for a while now, but some of the vintage takes with Dave, and the extended middle jam, were so awesome.

Re: Song of the Moment: Rearview Mirror
This was also a factor in killing the song for me. When I was young, I loved RVM. Both album and live. I absolutely think the combination of Matt's drumming and the seemingly endless (and boring) jam section made me very uninterested. Even now as I'm am re-finding my love of RVM I have zero interest in hearing a post Jack Irons version. And I totally agree with strat, the studio version is king.tragabigzanda wrote:The live versions have been underwhelming for a while now, but some of the vintage takes with Dave, and the extended middle jam, were so awesome.

Yeah it's tough to beat the studio. If anything I gotta listen to '94-95 versions if I'm going live.

I agree that the studio version is best, but live versions from its first few years are great -- the '94 versions for sure, and even the Jack versions have a nice loose-limbed gallop to them. But Eddie's been phoning in the vocals something fierce since about 2000 or so -- even when they find their way somewhere interesting during the middle section, Eddie's tossed off delivery sinks the overall performance. When people talk about modern live PJ being "sloppy," this song is Exhibit A.

Thank you. I can't stand to listen to recent live versions. I'd say 2000 was the last time I liked it live.tragabigzanda wrote:The live versions have been underwhelming for a while now, but some of the vintage takes with Dave, and the extended middle jam, were so awesome.

The song that got me into PJ.
Live versions don't do it for me. There's a ferocity in the studio version that they were never able to capture live, not even performances from the mid 90s.

this came on this morning and I realized I take this song for granted. it is flawless and I should find space for it in my top ten.

Re: Song of the Moment: Rearview Mirror
I love love love RVM! its lyrics are some of the most emotionally meaningful to me in the catalogue
the studio version of this song is perfect and nearly every live version is a train wreck, especially since they turned what was a perfect breakdown / buildup section into "saw things...", into a pointless 15 minute jam that kills momentum instead of lifting us into that final euphoric section
