I wonder how much of voice preservation comes down to choices and how much of it isn't just (un)lucky genetics or other factors. I know there's a "proper" way to sing and all that but it seems like most singers experience a loss in vocal ability as they age.

And his band tours WAY more extensively than PJ, and he has to sing song after song of screamed vocals like that. He still sounds amazing. Hasn't lost anything.

According to Wiki, that guy is fifteen years younger than Eddie -- give him time. That said, I would think extensive touring and performing would actually be to his advantage -- a guy who never lifts weights and arbitrarily attempts to bench press 300lbs. risks doing far greater permanent damage to his body than a guy who lifts weights several times a week and attempts the same thing. Sometimes sheer frequency of use doesn't tell the whole story.

I would also be curious to see some science on whether those hardcore/metal screams really are inherently more taxing on a singer's vocal cords than something like "Blood," or even "Adam Raised a Cain." Just because the music has harsher aesthetic limits doesn't necessarily mean that the vocal techniques are more demanding, and oftentimes I wonder if the fact that singers of Puciato's ilk aren't necessarily reaching for a specific pitch at the top of their range doesn't afford them some flexibility in how they employ the device. No real idea -- just a thought.

The point is many singers are proof positive that you can preserve your voice if you take care of it (and yourself). Eddie's voice is shredded because of his own choices, not because he has a few scream-y songs in his repertoire.

Any effective singer, metal or not, is going to use their diaphragm instead of just vocal cords. If you're using the right technique (mostly diaphragm), it's relatively easy to sustain that death metal growl. They're also using false vocal cords, which makes it possible to sing like that w/o destroying your voice. So we're kind of comparing apples/oranges here.

The problem with Ed circa 93-95ish was it was all throat. That 95 tour especially he's just killing his voice. Good thing it was so short. Add cigarettes/booze to the mix and it's remarkable he sounds as good as he does now.

Regardless, I'm much more impressed by range, which is harder to sustain through the years.
