All those later records are better written, and are very much the big payoff of the early explorations, but that 1964-66 period is really the heart of the art, as it were....that moment of total, almost blind inventive drive that ultimately created this incredible sound....a band that could balance their music on the absolute precipice of chaos, could do so indefinitely, and would sneer and strut while they did it.

I'm going to start this thread by saying the original version of A Quick One, While He's Away (which can be found on the 30 Years Maximum R&B box set) is the version to listen to.

That's great, but it's not the original version. It's a Frankenstein hybrid of the original version and the rock & roll circus version. Most of the liner notes/descriptions for that box set are completely wrong because the Who's production team are a bunch of fucktards.

The Who By Numbers is another great record, though sadly underrated.

I love Who By Numbers. "Slip Kid" is easily one of my favourite Who songs.

Been listening to their records all week, haven't done that in a while. Still really one of the all-time greats, but I have a feeling their popularity is at a low nowadays. They don't seem to find as many new and young fans discovering their music as let's say Led Zeppelin.

Speaking of discovering, some solo records are also really really good (althought most suck... ).

I find the live/studio transitions in the "Maximum R&B" version too jarring; I actually think the simple existence of that weird hybrid version is kind of baffling. This is the sweet stuff for me:

It's the perfect example of the controlled chaos almost going off the rails but kept in check by the ramrod backbone tone of Pete's Gibson SG Special (it's an ENGINE DRIV-AAAAAAH) each crushing windmill drawing the band back to the epicenter of Maximum R&B long incoherent description over.
